  • One of the main characteristics of the ECE curriculum here at Cal Poly Pomona is that just about every ECE class has a lab. These labs greatly reinforce material covered in lecture as well as give students hands-on experience with real circuits and systems - thereby implementing Cal Poly Pomona's "learn by doing" approach to teaching.

    LAB MATERIALS
Lab materials such as Proto Boards and BNC to Clips are available from the IEEE and SCETA student clubs. Also note the following -

    LAB FACILITIES
COMPUTING LAB - Room 9-409 is a general purpose computing lab with 42 Pentium 4 PC's and a LCD Projector. The focus is on student versions of basic engineering programs like PSPICE, MATLAB, Mathcad, Visual C++ , MS Office, and so on. The goal is to keep the lab open as much as possible. The lab also contains several benches with basic test equipment.

COMPUTING LAB - Room 9-205 is a classroom and general purpose computing lab with 29 Pentium 4 PC's and a LCD Projector. The focus is on student versions of basic engineering programs like PSPICE, MATLAB, Mathcad, Visual C++, MS Office and so on. The goal is to keep the lab open as much as possible.

GENERAL PURPOSE LABS - Rooms 9-431, 9-435 and 9-147 are general purpose labs with scopes, multimeters, power supplies and signal generators. These labs are used for measuring the time and frequency responses of linear circuits, for designing and measuring the responses of linear active circuits and for the building and testing of basic logic circuits including the programming and interfacing of microcontrollers. Rooms 9-431 and 9-435 have a total of 24 HP 100MHz oscilloscopes. Room 9-435 has a PAL programmer connected to a PC.

DIGITAL LABS - Room 9-503 is a digital lab for VHDL based PAL designs. It has a PAL programmer connected to a PC. A typical project is the designing, building and testing of an autoranging capacitor meter.

COMPUTER NETWORKING LAB - Room 9-507 is a computer networking lab with computers and cabling to implement local area networks. It's also used as a digital control lab implemented with ABEL based PAL designs. The lab has a PAL programmer connected to a PC. Typical experiments include simulation/checking of network performance.

INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROLS LAB - Room 9-329 is a lab for instrumentation and advanced controls. It has computers with LABVIEW and MATLAB for designing and simulating analog and digital controllers. The lab also has a number of transducers and such for instrumentation experiments. The lab also contains industrial instruments and controls that allow students to simulate real industrial processes. Typical student projects include thermal chambers, characterization of transducers, biomedical instrumentation and process simulation.

COMMUNICATION LAB - Room 9-523 is the Communications Laboratory. It currently supports a total of five undergraduate, technology and graduate courses in the areas of analog communications, digital communications, radio frequency (RF) design, and digital signal processing (DSP). It has twelve working stations equipped with HP spectrum analyzers (10 kHz - 1.5 GHz), HP dual channel digital oscilloscopes (100 MHz), AF/RF generators (200 kHz - 6.25 MHz), computers, printers, HP function generators, HP pulse generators, HP counters, waveform generators, Texas Instruments' digital signal processors, Krohn-Hite filters, and power supplies. The laboratory also has a satellite receiving station and a shielded chamber. The lab has received substantial donations of equipment from HP.

MICROWAVE LAB - Room 9-529 is the Radio-Frequency Laboratory. It currently supports a total of eight undergraduate, technology and graduate courses in the areas of RF, microwave, applied electromagnetics and antenna theory. It provides hands-on experience in measurement techniques at RF/microwave frequencies ranging from 10 MHz to 18 GHz. It has eight working stations equipped with signal generators, slotted lines, waveguides, RF components, VSWR meters, and power meters. The laboratory has six modern network analyzers, four reflection/transmission test units, and a spectrum analyzer for extensive microwave circuit design and characterization up to 18 GHz. It also has an anechoic chamber for antenna and EMI/RFI measurements. The lab has recently received substantial donations of equipment from HP.

LIGHTING LAB - Room 9-101 is a special purpose lab devoted to illumination engineering. It has specialized equipment such as integrating spheres, EMC pre-compliance software and hardware, environmental chambers, spectrum analyzers, CAD system, PSPICE and IEEE 488 controlled power supplies and voltmeters. Typical experiments consist of measuring lamp characteristics such as luminous efficacy, chromaticity and fixture efficiency.

POWER LAB - Room 9-111 is a special purpose lab for power students that includes electrical machines and power systems. It has 7.5 hp AC and DC machines. The AC machines are controlled by square D controllers. The lab also has a generalized electrical machine that can be configured as DC or AC. DC and AC machine experiments are done to measure power, torque and simulation of transient responses.
