eLearning Academy Outline

 

The DOLCE eLearning Academy is structured as a blended learning course (participants meet both face-to-face and online).  Part of the point of the academy is to show the faculty participants how courses can be facilitated in an online format.  The eLearning Academy does not focus on the technology used to create the content or design the course; it focuses on the faculty's facilitation techniques. 

Course Goal

To prepare faculty to facilitate online and blended learning courses that engage learners by applying theory, concepts, and principles.

Course Description

The eLearning Academy is a facilitated course designed for faculty who are or may be facilitating online and blended learning courses. The eLearning Academy demonstrates and shares a spectrum of online learning concepts, theories, and principles using interactive and collaborative methods.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the eLearning Academy, participants will be able to:

1. Design online or blended learning course content that acknowledges a variety of learning styles.

2. Plan and facilitate activities that promote active learning.

3. Create online assessments that serve to demonstrate learner outcomes and promote academic honesty.

4. Apply strategies to organize and manage an online or blended learning course.

5. Create digital content that is accessible to learners with disabilities.

Course Content Information

Topics covered in the elearning Academy include:

1. Acknowledging teaching and learning styles

2. Promoting active learning online

3. Informing students of course netiquette

4. Providing FAQs and a dynamic syllabus;

5. Developing course management policies

6. Utilizing eLearning technologies

7. Creating and delivering assessments

8. Discouraging plagiarism

9. Addressing copyright issues

10. Promoting digital content accessibility.

Module Framework

In general, each module follows a consistent framework, categorized into the following elements:

1. Module Introduction – (Overview of module content, objectives and activities)

2. Topic Content Pages

3. Activities and Assignments – (Methods by which students are actively involved in the course)

4. Connections – (Links to URLs and other resources)

5. Tools, Tips, and Techniques – (Methods for applying  the content being learned)

6. Best Practices – (Student submissions for best practices for each module topic)

7. E-Journal – (Student reflections on what is being learned)

8. Module Resources – (List of additional URLs to supplement each topic)

Technology Prerequisites

Participants must have a mastery of basic computer skills and software applications; online skills including web browsers, website navigation, search engines, and e-mail communication; document management skills including e-mail attachments, file management, and uploading and downloading files; and understanding of various file formats. A basic familiarity of the learning management management system offered at Cal Poly is also useful.
