Personal Statement

I shocked a meeting with academic professionals by saying that I did not feel I could teach anyone, anything. My role as an educator is to facilitate individual learning; to provide the tools, climate, and support required for students to teach themselves. More >>

My philosophy remained constants as an educator in supervisory/administrative positions. The role of leadership was to provide the climate, tools, and support required for teachers to facilitate students’ learning.

Each school, each student, has an ethos that is a sponge for learning and teaching. The sponge absorbs best when dampened by motivation. However, motivation is not monolithic. It is ethos-driven. An effective leader understands the ethos of the school’s constituents and uses that understanding to motivate.

Tools and support go beyond dollars and goods. Parents are a tool essential for the support necessary to create a climate that facilitates student learning and inspired teaching. An effective leader understands the role of parents in creating the learning ethos of an institution. The leader understands that while change will be necessary, all school constituents, especially parents, must understand, accept, and support change.

None of this works without mutual respect devoid of suspicion. An effective leader must be honest, ethical, and transparent in relationships with all school participants. These are not attributes that are achieved quickly. They take time.

A great leader must be patient.
