Needs Assessment

Students who take Introduction to Jazz Styles have limited exposure to the musical instruments used in jazz. They are therefore limited in their ability to recognize the instruments when they see them and are also limited in their ability to recognize the instruments when they hear them.

To be sucessful in the class students need these skills, therefore, training should be given to help students identify jazz instruments orally and visually.

 Task Analysis

General Knowledge Required

1. Ability to differentiate between rhythm instruments and horns.
2. Ability to differentiate between large instruments and small instruments
3. Ability to differentiate between string instruments, drums, keyboard, woodwind and brass instruments.
4. Ability to hear different qualities of sound
5. Ability to remember each different instruments (strings, drums, keyboard, woodwind, brass) acoustic and electric sound quality.

 Learner Profile

Students who take Introduction to Jazz Styles are culturally diverse. They are usually 18-30 years old, and have listened to music from 10-25 years. They usually have been exposed to jazz music and want to know more about it. They usually do not have the general knowledge required to identify jazz instruments by sight and sound.

 Performance Objectives

1. Identify jazz keyboard instruments by sight and by sound.
2. Recognize jazz drums by sight and by sound.
3. Identify a jazz guitar by sight and by sound.
4. Recognize jazz basses by sight and by sound.
5. Identify jazz brass instruments by sight and by sound.
6. Recognize jazz woodwind instruments by sight and by sound.
