The Role of Diversity and Compliance
The Office of Diversity and Compliance, in collaboration with other campus constituencies, provides leadership and support toward developing a comprehensive and institution-wide approach to achieving and sustaining a diverse and pluralistic community of students, faculty and staff. The Office is committed to promoting a working and learning environment free of discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or covered veterans’ status. It guides, directs, assists and monitors the administration, faculty, and staff to ensure fair and equal treatment of all individuals in the processes, which affect education and employment by enforcing all federal/state laws and regulations, CSU system-wide executive orders, as well as university policies and procedures related to civil rights, affirmative action, and non-discrimination.
What We Do
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Provide vision and policy direction for maintaining and enhancing a diverse student body and workforce.
- Plan, coordinate, implement and oversee the University’s diversity and compliance programs.
- Ensure the University’s compliance with federal and state Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Affirmative Action (AA) laws, and the development of an annual Affirmative Action Plan.
- Make policy recommendations that enhance the University’s AA and EEO commitment.
- Provide consultation to departments and search committees on recruitment strategies and procedures, on administrative, faculty and staff hiring decisions, and devise strategies for enhanced recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and staff.
- Provide a forum of redress through the investigation and resolution of complaints filed by students, faculty and staff alleging unlawful discriminatory employee conduct.
- Serve as a resource to facilitate conflict resolution.
- Coordinate compliance with the American with Disability Act (ADA) and state disability laws for all faculty and staff matters/oversee the Assistive Accommodations Fund.
- Partner with various University departments to ensure physical and program accessibility for the disabled to University facilities, programs, services and benefits.
- Provide training and education to promote nondiscrimination, such as sexual harassment, EEO and ADA compliance and diversity awareness programs.
- Partner with campus multicultural organizations and faculty in developing approaches that promote multiculturalism and meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Serve as management liaison to governmental enforcement agencies and minority community groups and organizations.
