ASSIGNMENTS

Due dates will be discussed in class. Generally speaking, the reports are due one week from the date they are assigned. However, I am willing to be flexible about this. Always be prepared to discuss these assignments (i.e., your films that you're watching and critiquing).

1. Ethnographic film review - possible films are listed in Readings/Materials

You a) choose and view an ethnographic film; b) prepare to discuss it in class, in terms of its theme, messages, and how or how well it conveys them; and c) write up a critical review to turn in as a short report (1-2 pp.) .

Specifically, you need to (a) identify the film, (b) state the theme or topic of the film, (c) if there are specific questions and issues it addresses within the general theme, state those, (d) describe the method of presentation (i.e., interviews? cinema verite? voice-over? whatever techniques are used), (e) discuss and evaluate the approaches and technical aspects, (f) discuss how effective the film is, in terms of conveying information and dealing with the theme. Finally, (g) how well does the film do in terms of holding your attention and appealing to general interest?

You can view some of Saul Landau's films at http://video.csupomona.edu/streaming/daf/saul_landau.html on the web. There are a number of other documentaries at video streaming, too.

DUE: April 23

2. Hollywood film of anthropological interest - should not have any trouble finding something in the video store or library.

Same procedure as assignment #1.

DUE: May 2

3. International film - possible films are listed in Readings/Materials

Same procedure as above.

DUE: May 16

4. Individual project.

DUE: May 30 (but presentations in class before that, if at all possible!)

DIGITAL SHOWCASE May 25

5. Class readings (Ruby and Barbash and Taylor texts). Discussion of the readings will take place either in class when we can afford the time or on-line using Blackboard. Check the Discussion Board in Blackboard periodically for questions and information on the reading assignments.
