INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PROJECT
This research will result in a term paper or report of about ten pages' length, plus a Works cited page(s). The topic is of your choosing, as long as it is related to the themes of gender and sexuality we are addressing in the course. It could be a follow-up on one of the articles or topics discussed in class, or something you have been interested in all along. You will conduct a survey of the scholarly literature on this subject, identifying the main works, and reading as much as you are able, given the time constraints. If you want to do supplementary reading on the Internet or in popular media, go ahead, making sure to document every source. If you can do any supplementary field work, that would be great. Most topics will not be possible to do field work on, because you don't have time. For instance, if you were working on socialization of boys and girls in the Philippines, you probably don't have time to go there (but, of course, there are Filipino Americans around you could interview!). Remember, the Internet sources are not all equally valid, and most of them are not as valid as published articles and books. The purpose of this assignment is for you to develop expertise on a subject relevant to our field of study that is interesting to you and important to our general understanding of gender.
