This is a take-home test. You have one week to do it; it is due Mar. 17th at 11:30 at the latest in my office. You may turn it in earlier if you like.

1. Describe the belief system of the Dene people of "Northern Passage". What are the main points of similarity and difference with other belief systems, such as those mentioned in class, your people whom you researched, and that of the Holy Ghost People?

2. Describe the use of territory, pattern of movement, and concept of boundaries of the Cree and Chip (modern hunter-gatherers). How do these characteristics interact with the directions of, first, colonialism, and now modernization?

3. Compare and contrast the main aspects of the ritual you attended and that of the Holiness Church service in the film. What kinds of rituals are they?

4. You are teaching an 8th grade Social Studies course, and have decided to include a week-long unit on Social Anthropology. Design the syllabus for this unit, being sure to present the objectives of the whole unit and of its specific components, the basic materials you will use, the specific subjects the students will learn and work with, any exercises or activities that support their learning, and the way you will evaluate the students, if any. Also, tell your students why you think it is important to add this unit to the course.

5. Cite several examples of drinking behavior typical of the cultural milieu Bob Jarvenpa is studying. In what ways is drinking an important social issue for the Chipewyan people? How does Bob handle the issue of drinking, as he conducts his research? In general, how should anthropologists develop their epistemology and methodology of fieldwork in cultures that employ inebriants?
