SINGLE SUBJECT PROGRAM OPTIONS
Cal Poly Pomona’s Single Subject Credential Program operates on the quarter system, allowing students to complete the coursework in four consecutive academic quarters provided students achieve program admission in Fall quarter. Prerequisite courses and program core courses are offered both during the day and in the evenings. Required classroom observation and participation must be completed during the daytime. Clinical Practice requires full-time, daily participation in a local classroom.
Cal Poly Pomona offers the Internship Credential Program in Multiple Subject, Single Subject (not including art education and agricultural education), and Education Specialist credentials. The Internship program is unique because it provides individuals with the opportunity to work as a paid professional educator while completing a teacher preparation program. Complete information is provided at the Internship Orientation.
Two quarters (formally called “blocks”) of Clinical Practice are required for the Single Subject credential. Admission to Clinical Practice requires a separate application with strictly enforced deadlines The Clinical Practice Placement Office will place you in an appropriate classroom setting. (Interns are exempt from this application requirement.) Contact the Credential Services Office for the application forms, procedures and deadlines.
Once admitted to Clinical Practice, candidates will receive a letter detailing placement information and the name of their university supervisor. The supervisor will then contact the candidate within the first few days of the quarter, if not before. During the two quarters of Clinical Practice, the candidate completes 11 weeks (per quarter) of full-time teaching in a classroom appropriate to the credential being earned. Attendance at weekly or biweekly seminars is required. For Clinical Practice, there is a Credit or No Credit grade. When a candidate is at risk for not passing Clinical Practice, the University Supervisor will work diligently with the candidate to attempt to meet the required Clinical Practice competencies. The University reserves the right to enact University appeal procedures in these circumstances (see the Cal Poly Pomona University Catalog for further information).
Students have five (5) years to complete the Single Subject Credential Program. Within that period, students have one (1) year to complete Clinical Practice and apply for the preliminary credential. Students may petition for an extension of these time limits. All petitions must be approved by the Department of Education Appeals Committee.
