With just 3 quarters of coursework (including Clinical Practice), candidates may add on a Preliminary Education Specialist (ES) credential to a Preliminary or Clear Multiple (MS) or Single Subjects (SS) credential. The Preliminary ES Credential authorizes the holder to teach in K-12 classroom settings appropriate to the credential (including programs for students up to the age of 22 years). The Preliminary ES Credential is good for 5 years and must be followed by completion of a Clear ES Credential program prior to the expiration date of the Preliminary. Universities and districts which offer the Clear ES Credential can be found on the CTC website.
Candidates who already have a MS or SS Credential need to be admitted to the University (using the CSU online application at csumentor.edu) and to the Credential Program (using the Special Education Credential Application Packet – SECAP). Once admitted, candidates may proceed through the course requirements for either the Preliminary Mild/Moderate Credential and/or the Preliminary Moderate/Severe Credential. Each credential requires one quarter of full-time Clinical Practice (through either student teaching or Internship) in a classroom appropriate to the credential being earned. Clinical Practice (CP) requires submission of a separate application prior to the established deadlines for each quarter.
You can view detailed information about our programs on our website. You can also add a Master of Arts degree to your credential – see the M.A. website for more information.
Traditional program. This is a traditional pathway for candidates who need to maintain personal schedules during the day with the option to take classes in the late afternoon. Candidates complete required coursework prior to Clinical Practice (student teaching). Cal Poly Pomona places student teachers in public school classrooms, with the guidance and support of the classroom Cooperating Teacher and a University Supervisor.
Intern Program Option. The Intern Program is an alternative credential pathway that allows candidates to work in public K-12 schools (including programs for students up to the age of 22) as the teacher-of-record while they complete required coursework to obtain their credential. Further information is provided at the Intern Program website or contact the Credential Services Office.

The Road Maps below assume a candidate plans to finish the program within one year. However, you may take as many or as few courses as you wish each quarter. All courses are not offered every quarter; see the Year-Round Schedule for details.
Courses fill quickly – try to register as soon as you can. Remember, you must submit a separate Clinical Practice application by the stated deadline in order to be admitted to Clinical Practice. Plan ahead – Clinical Practice applications are due 1-2 quarters in advance!
