Consistent with the University’s mission, the Education Specialist (ES) Credential programs at Cal Poly Pomona reflect a focus on linking theory to practice, leadership, and preparing credential candidates for educational careers in a changing multicultural world. Our programs are designed in accordance with the Education Specialist Teaching and Other Related Services Credential Program Standards as adopted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), December 2008-January 2010. The Education Specialist program consists of preliminary and advanced credentials and a Master’s degree. Additional information appears in the Special Education Handbook.

Please read the information on this webpage as it describes key elements of our program. All students wishing to enter the ES credential programs are required to attend one of the monthly Orientation Sessions – click here for the Orientation schedule.
The University Catalog contains complete information on course descriptions, required prerequisites and essential information about registration procedures, fees and policies. Email is the official method used by the Department and the University to communicate with students. Check your Cal Poly Pomona email often.

The prerequisite courses are those required to be completed prior to admission to the Education Specialist credential program. You may enroll in any or all of the prerequisites once you have been admitted to the University. Pay careful attention to course prefixes (i.e., TED, EDS, or GED). Important note: Each prerequisite course includes 10-15 hours of field experience, during which you must participate in observations and other activities in local public school classrooms. Be sure your schedule will allow you ample time to complete required fieldwork hours for each course.

While enrolled, attend the necessary orientations, acquire and complete the Admissions Packet, and make sure that you have met subject matter competence.
One of the state requirements for earning the Education Specialist Credential is verification of subject matter knowledge. Candidates who already have a Multiple or Single Subject Credential have met subject matter competence and do not need to meet it again. (NOTE: Districts may require additional subject matter requirements as a condition of hire.). Note: Subject matter competency must be met in order to be admitted to the ES Credential program.
The state of California requires that all teachers have knowledge in the subject areas in which they will be teaching. To meet subject matter competence, Education Specialist Credential Candidates must pass the appropriate subject matter examinations:
Evaluations of transcripts for courses taken from another university will be conducted for currently accepted/enrolled Cal Poly Pomona students. Students wishing to waive a Cal Poly Pomona credential course and substitute a course or courses taken from another university must complete the Course Equivalency Request form available online. Attach a copy of transcripts along with a copy of the catalog course description and course syllabus for the year taken. Submit these materials to the Credential Services Office.
Students applying to the credential program will also complete an interview with your Faculty Advisor as part of the Admissions process. During this interview, you must also complete and sign the appropriate Program Plan – bring a blank plan with you to the interview. Faculty advisors are as follows:
