Guidelines for Change of Advisor and/or Committee Members

If your advisor is no longer able to advise you due to retirement or any other reason, please contact the graduate coordinator before you switch to a new advisor to make sure you will have smooth transition to the new advisor.

If you choose to change your advisor, you may need to retake at least 3 units of CS 691 if you haven't completed the proposal yet. Even if you have completed the proposal with the previous advisor, your new advisor may require you to take CS 691 again for working on the new proposal. Bottom line, you need letter grade(s) (not SP, nor RP) on at least 3 units of CS 691. For CS 696, you should take at least 4 units of CS 696 with the new advisor for completion of the thesis.

We advise you to contact the graduate coordinator before you switch to a new advisor. Once you switch to a new advisor, you have to inform the graduate coordinator the name of your new advisor immediately.

If you would change a thesis committee member, you need to contact your advisor first. Your advisor and the other thesis committee member must agree on the formation of the new thesis committee. Inform the graduate coordinator once a new committee member is chosen.

If the new thesis committee is formed after you have completed CS 691, you must submit to the graduate coordinator a copy of your thesis proposal with the names and signatures of your new thesis committee.
