About The Competition

LOS ANGELES 2057
Envision/Imagine the Future of Los Angeles

download jpg (1+ mb)In April 2007, the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona celebrates our 50th anniversary. The 50th anniversary is a time for reflection and vision; a time to look back and forward upon visions and values of society, culture and the environment through the eyes of designers. It is a time to imagine the problems and opportunities the future brings and a time to collectively speculate about the role of the design professions in the next fifty years.

This is a call for projects that envision life in the Los Angeles region fifty years from now to incite discussions about the future of landscapes, society and the environment.

Los Angeles is a bellwether - an early indicator or marker, making it an appropriate case study for the future of American cities and landscapes. The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Landscape Architecture mission is "Re - generating Los Angeles." The term regenerative is a starting point for contemplation in this ideas competition. Fragmentation of 're-generate' implies restoration of existing regimes, while 'generate' calls for new solutions. What will be the problems facing Los Angeles in the year 2057? How do we imagine those problems? What will be our solutions based upon our values and resources?

Competition entrants may address these questions in any fashion they feel is relevant and insightful. Should strategies be 'top - down' from organized governance, or large-scale, comprehensive frameworks? Or do moments - small scale inventions/interventions become the best way to address pressing issues? We welcome all speculation upon imagining the state of the future and what we wish it to be.

Successful entries will be both provocative and insightful, in tandem.

Sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. Contact Assistant Professor Ken McCown at kmccown@csupomona.edu with specific questions.
