Dear Graduates,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of The Collins College of Hospitality Management, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you and your families. The degrees you will be awarded today are testaments to your hard work and determination, and they will set you apart as you embark on your careers. We have challenged you with a rigorous management education deeply rooted in practice and theory. As students, it has been your choice to receive and apply this education. Your degree is proof that you not only took this challenge, but that you excelled.
The 2012 commencement ceremony marks a historical moment for The Collins College of Hospitality Management as we bestow degrees to our first class of the Master of Science in Hospitality Management program. It is my honor to congratulate the 12 students who make up this prestigious group. I have had the pleasure to get to know them as they progressed through their studies. I am proud of their accomplishments, and I expect great things from them.
The Collins College is the oldest and largest hospitality management program on the West Coast. Our alumni are talented individuals who have made noteworthy inroads in the hospitality industry. We hope that as you join them, that you keep in touch with us. You will always be a member of The Collins College family, and we wish you well.

Robert W. Small, Ph.D.
Professor, The Collins College of Hospitality Management
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Robert W. Small, Ph.D., is professor emeritus and former dean (twice) of Cal Poly Pomona’s Collins College of Hospitality Management where he most recently taught wine and beverage courses. He completed a university textbook, Beverage Basics: “Understanding and Appreciating Wine, Beer, and Spirits,” released by John Wiley in fall 2011. He completed his 14th year as Chairman of the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2011, one of the oldest and largest wine competitions in North America. He also judges at several international wine competitions throughout the country and is an emeritus board member of the California Restaurant Association as well as its Educational Foundation. He is leading his second Collins College/Cal Poly trip to northern Italy this fall for alumni and friends of the College and University. He also owns Dr. Bob’s Handcrafted Ice Creams, a manufacturer of premium ice cream sold at gourmet markets and food stores, restaurants, clubs and hotels throughout California, over the internet, and at the Los Angeles County Fair. Dr. Bob’s Ice Creams was most recently highlighted on the Today Show in December 2011 and has been reviewed by a number of national magazines and California newspapers.
