Dear Graduates,
I want to personally congratulate you on the most important achievement in your life. You
have earned a place in society as an educated person – a college graduate in higher education.
Many staff and faculty have worked extremely hard to insure that you received a quality
education which will contribute to your success in the upcoming years. You are now part of a 74 year old legacy which began humbly as a two year agricultural school for young men to a multi-disciplinary polytechnic university of international renown.
Your parents, spouses and family members should be very proud of your accomplishment.
Many of them, of course, have sacrificed and supported you over the years and deserve to be praised and honored. Our staff and faculty did their very best to ensure that you received a quality education that you can be proud of.
You will always be part of our Agriculture Family as you go forth into your respective careers. Do not become a stranger. Please stay connected with us and share your Cal Poly Pomona experiences with others. We look forward to becoming life-long friends and partners with you.
You will now be joining the ranks of the many thousands of College of Agriculture graduates who have preceded you. Let people know you are a Cal Poly Pomona graduate. You are ready to take your place and to begin contributing to the most important industry in the state of California. I want to wish you well as you embark on your life’s next journey.

The green and maze colored honor cords designate those graduates who have been inducted into Gamma Sigma Delta (International Agriculture Honorary Society) in recognition of their scholarly achievement.

RONALD R. SIMONS
“Mr. Cal Poly Pomona”
The license plate frame on Ron Simons’ car says it all: Mr. Cal Poly Pomona. The frame, a gift from a colleague, is an apt description of someone who has been a fixture at the university for more than 50 years, first as a student and then as an administrator.
Ron Simons enrolled at the university before women were admitted in 1961. He was the first student to move into the Alamitos residence hall, the oldest dorm on campus. He met every president in the university’s history and worked for the last four. He portrayed an astronaut on the Cal Poly Universities rose float “Man on the Moon” seven years before Neil Armstrong got there.
It is fair to say that he has seen it all at Cal Poly Pomona – but he is not being honored today for longevity. He is being honored for his lasting impact on Cal Poly Pomona.
While working on his second degree in the mid-1960s, Simons recognized a need for an alumni office, which he mentioned to then University President Robert Kramer. With hardly a pause, Kramer told him the job was his. He had no budget, and his office was nothing more than a converted storage closet, but with persistence, unflagging optimism and a wonderful sense of humor, Simons launched Alumni Affairs. Today, his creation is the division of University Advancement, which has raised tens of millions of dollars to benefit education, thanks to the university’s many generous alumni and friends.
Take a look around campus and you will see the product of Ron Simons’ efforts, but his real legacy lies in the thousands and thousands of lives he has touched: the alumni, today’s graduates, and tomorrow’s students who will reap the benefits of his dedicated service.
