Collins College Alumni Chapter News

With more than 3,300 alumni around the country and the globe, the chapter is striving to bring HRT alumni back to The Collins College family. As part this continuous effort to build the network through increasing membership, the chapter is creating a calendar of events throughout the year which will include: hosted alumni networking events, social mixers, and even offer special member benefits and discounts. Below, find a brief schedule of events planned over the next few months. We look forward to seeing you at one of these events soon!

March 8 - Collins College Alumni Mixer in Santa Monica
Join The Collins College Alumni Chapter for its monthly mixer at 7 p.m. at Cache Restaurant & Lounge, 3110 Main Street, Santa Monica. Alumna Heather Dancel, '08, manager of the restaurant, will host. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. RSVP by March 4 to ajsmith@csupomona.edu.

April 13 - Collins College Alumni Wine Dinner FundraiserFleming's postcard
The Collins College Alumni Chapter Board cordially invites alumni and friends to Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar for an evening of great food, wine & company. Operating Partner Russ Bendel, Jr. ’05 will host this exclusive fundraiser on Tuesday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $65 for members / $75 for non-members. May 10 - Collins College Alumni Mixer in Orange
Join The Collins College Alumni Chapter for its monthly mixer on May 10 at 7 p.m. at Lucille’s Rib Shack at 4050 West Chapman Avenue in Orange. Alumnus Arthur “Tripp” Mitchell will host. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. RSVP by May 4 to ajsmith@csupomona.edu.

May 13 - Professor for a Day - Cal Poly Pomona
Former students are invited to share information on professional life with current students. The event includes a lunch for participating faculty and alumni at The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch. Director of Communications and External Relations Lisa McPheron will be coordinating the college's guest speakers. Please contact Lisa McPheron if you would like to participate.

May 23 - 2nd Annual Chicago Alumni Mixer
Cal Poly Pomona alumni are cordially invited to an Alumni Champagne Reception on Sunday, May 23 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at Hotel Felix, 111 W. Huron Street in Downtown Chicago. Join fellow alumni as we honor Collins College of Hospitality Management Professor Dr. Jerry Chesser for being inducted into the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's College of Diplomates. The event is free and hosted by Andy Feinstein, dean of The Collins College, and Alumna Eva Wassermann '86 and her husband Roger Hill. July 30 - 2nd Annual Alumni in the Outfield
The Collins College of Hospitality Management Alumni Chapter invites all hotel and restaurant management alumni, faculty and staff to an evening at the ballpark. Join the chapter for a pre-game party at OC Sport Grill at 5 p.m. and a game at 7:05 p.m. on July 30 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. More details coming soon.


Alumni Chapter Meetings

Starting in September 2009, the monthly board meetings will be held at different locations across Southern California. By hosting meetings at alumni-owned/operated restaurants, bars, hotels, country clubs, etc., the chapter hopes to be able to reach more alumni. After each board meeting the chapter will meet for a non formal networking hour with alumni.

Chartered in 1985, the chapter's mission is to promote networking with alumni throughout the hospitality industry.

Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association

Of Cal Poly Pomona's 105,000 alumni, many have remained active with the university by joining the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association. Joining the Alumni Association is a way of showing support for current and future alumni as well as programs that are meant to help enrich the lives of students. Feb. 18 - 2nd Annual Bagel Mixer, The Collins College
Collins College of Hospitality Management alumni were invited on Feb. 18 to the 17th annual Hospitality Career Expo and 2nd annual Alumni Bagel Mixer. The alumni mixer took place in Amemiya Boardroom before the Hospitality Career Expo.

Feb. 1 - Collins College Alumni Chapter’s L.A.
The Collins College of Hospitality Management Alumni Chapter held its first mixer of 2010 on Feb. 1 in Los Angeles. Jim Collins was a guest of honor at the event hosted by chapter treasurer Ivee Yu '08 and fellow alumni Andrew Rosenfield '05. About 30 people attended.

New York Marriott Marquis hotelMonday, Nov. 9 - Alumni Mixer - New York
Several Cal Poly Pomona alumni joined Dean Andy Feinstein overlooking the heart of Times Square during the 2nd Annual NYC Alumni Mixer. The event took place Monday, Nov. 9 at the New York Marriott Marquis’ Promenade (9th floor), located at 1535 Broadway, New York City.

Monday, Oct. 26 - Alumni Mixer - Newport Beach
Chapter Vice President Russ Bendel, Jr. ’05, Operating Partner at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Newport Beach hosted a monthly chapter at his restaurant on Monday, Oct. 26.

Tuesday, Oct. 20 - Alumni/Student Speed Networking, Claremont
The Collins College Alumni Chapter Board hosted a speed networking event for students and alumni on Oct. 20 at the Buca di Beppo in Claremont.

Monday, Sept. 28 - Chapter Meeting and Mixer at Zucca Ristorante
The Alumni Chapter hosted a mixer on Sept. 28, 7 p.m. at Zucca Ristorante. Zucca is in Los Angeles at 801 South Figueroa and is managed by Collins graduate Perri Shindler.

Friday, August 7 - Alumni in the Outfield- Anaheim Stadium 
More than 50 people came out and enjoyed a day at the ballpark with alumni on Friday, Aug. 7, during The Collins College Alumni Chapter’s first Alumni in the Outfield at Anaheim Stadium.

A pre-game networking event took place across the street from the stadium at OC Sports Grill (Formerly National Sports Grill).

The Collins College Alumni Chapter held its first Bay Area event on Thursday, July 30 at the St. Francis Yacht Club - On The Marina. Alumnus Ronald Banaszak, Jr., CCM, General Manager/COO of the club generously hosted the bay-side event. Dean Andy Feinstein, who was in San Francisco attending the I-CHRIE conference, gave a presentation about The Collins College of Hospitality Management, which is on the cusp of a major expansion. Feinstein also discussed plans to launch the state's first master's in hospitality management program and the university's award-winning Horsehill Vineyards wine.

Thursday, May 21 - Jimmy Buffett Tailgate Alumni Mixer - Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
Calling all Parrotheads - the alumni chapter got a group together for a Jimmy Buffet concert on May 21, 2009 at the Irvine Wireless Amphitheater.

Sunday, May 17 - National Restaurant Association Show Alumni Mixer – Chicago, IL
The Collins College of Hospitality Management invited all Cal Poly Pomona alumni in the greater Chicago area or those in town for the National Restaurant Show, to a networking mixer on Sunday, May 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the newly renovated, Hotel Felix in downtown Chicago. This boutique hotel is downtown Chicago’s first hotel designed to meet Silver LEED certification. http://hotelfelixchicago-px.trvlclick.com/ President Michael Ortiz and Betty Ortiz attended the event. Dean Andy Feinstein, Alumna Eva Wassermann and her husband Roger Hill graciously hosted the event.

Thursday, May 14 - Professor For The Day - The Collins College
The Office of Alumni Affairs hosted the annual Professor For the Day on May 14. Numerous alumni came back to campus to give guest lectures.

Tuesday, April 21 - Dinner & Wine Tasting at Fleming's
Nearly 30 people attended The Collins College Alumni Chapter Board's first fund-raiser on April 21, 2009 at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Newport Beach. Operating Partner and Chapter Vice President Russ Bendel, Jr. ‘05 hosted the exclusive dinner.

March 31 - Alumni Wine Tasting Event – Downtown LA
More than 20 people joined The Collins College Alumni Chapter and Ian Blackburn '91, owner of LearnAboutWine.com, on March 31, 2009 for a night of networking and wine tasting. Blackburn hosted the event at his business LearnAboutWine.com – Southern California’s No. 1 source for wine education and events - is located at LOFT218 in downtown Los Angeles. The networking event featured wine tasting, wine games, competitions.

February 26 - Alumni Breakfast
More than 30 alumni came to the alumni chapter's first event on Feb. 26, 2009. The event was held in conjunction with the 16th annual Hospitality Career Expo.
