Career Month: Featuring the 19th Annual Hospitality Career Expo, Feb. 16

The Collins College of Hospitality Management and the Cal Poly Pomona Career Center will host the 19th annual 2012 Hospitality Career Expo on Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The expo is the college’s largest one-day event for students and alumni to gain exposure to numerous hospitality companies. The expo will take place at The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch.

For Companies

This career expo is limited to 55 leading companies in the hospitality industry. This expo can be quite popular and space is limited.

Early-bird registration ends Jan. 26. Once the early-bird registration deadline passes, the cost will increase from $375 ($200 for government/non-profit organizations) to $425 ($250 for government/non-profit organizations).

There are several upcoming events that will help students prepare for the expo. Students should consider attending and participating in as many as their schedule permits to give themselves a competitive edge. This list will be updated as events are planned. Feb. 1 – Rock Your Resume Workshop

This workshop assists students in developing a hospitality resume from scratch. It covers all the basics of how to organize one's information on paper with appropriate wording that will make a resume effective. If you have never written a resume or wish to take a fresh look at your resume this is a great workshop for you!

Feb. 2 – RESUMANIAC, Sponsored by CMAA

Representatives from leading hospitality companies arrive on campus to provide on-the-spot resume checks to help students prepare for Career Expo. Companies in years past have included representatives from Marriott, Southern Wine and Spirits, Pacific Palms, Enterprise and more. Drop in for professional feedback on your resume, no appointment needed. Students must have a paper copy of their resume on-hand.

Feb. 2 – Etiquette Dinner, Sponsored by ASEP

ASEP invites students to come and learn proper business etiquette and enjoy a fabulous meal with fellow students.

Feb. 3 – Mornings of Motivation, Sponsored by The Collins College Board of Advisors

This invitation-only event helps junior- and senior-level students focus on their future and career prospects after college. Topics include: the transition from school to work and preparing to enter the hospitality industry as a leader. This is facilitated by Bridget Bilinski, Area Vice President Southern California Marriott International and Collins College alumnus.

Feb. 7- Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Information Table

Walt Disney Parks & Resorts is recruiting candidates to apply for roles in fine dining at the Disneyland Resort. They have a variety of roles available and will be available during U-hour to speak with interested students.

Feb.  13 – Networking 101, Sponsored by the Mentor Program

Learn the basics of networking with members of the Mentor Program. This interactive evening will include opportunities to explore your “30-second commercial,” importance of sending thank you notes, informational interviews, maintain your network and more. Limited spots are available.

Feb. 13 – Hyatt Information Session

Information on Hyatt’s Corporate Internship Program and Corporate Management Training Program will be presented. Students are encouraged to visit http://hyatt.jobs/ to apply online prior to the information session. On campus interviews will be held on Feb. 14 and 15 in the Career Center. Students MUST attend the information session to be scheduled for an interview.

Feb.  16 – multiple events  

Hospitality Career Expo

Come interact with a variety of employers in the hospitality industry. Representatives from hotels, restaurants, clubs and many other areas of the field will be present to talk to students about current and future opportunities for employment and internships. Freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors and master’s students are all encouraged to attend. Professional dress is required.

Alumni Bagel Mixer

Dean Andy Feinstein and The Collins Hospitality Society will host a breakfast for alumni prior to the Hospitality Career Expo. The alumni mixer will start at 8:30 a.m. in the Amemiya Boardroom.

Graduating Senior and Recruiter Mixer

Collins College students with a 2012 graduation date are invited to stay and mingle with recruiters after the career fair. Due to space considerations we can only allow a limited number of students to attend. Professional dress is required.

Do you know what you're worth? Students will learn how to research salaries, benefits, and negotiation tactics to increase their leverage of securing a competitive salary in the job market.

Feb.  28 – Hire me! Interviewing Workshop

Nervous about what to say, how to act, or what to do on an interview? Learn effective strategies to develop strong interviewing skills. You will learn how to answer "tough" questions like "What are your weaknesses?" and "Why should I hire you over someone else?"

Business Cards For Students

The Hospitality Management Council will begin selling business cards starting on Tuesday, Jan. 10 through Feb. 9 during U-Hour. These business cards will be perfect for the upcoming Career Expo. Business cards are going to be $25 (cash only) for 250 cards. HMC will have a booth up for students to turn in their form and their cash during U-Hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are Giving Away an iPad!

We are giving away an iPad! For events throughout Career Month we will be giving away raffle tickets to students who attend events. The more events you attend the better chance you have to win!

iPad Giveaway guidelines:

  • Students can earn a maximum of one ticket per event at each of the events listed with the exception of the Career Expo, Graduating Senior Mixer, Afternoons of Awareness, interview days and the Etiquette Dinner.
  • In order to be eligible to receive tickets and win, you must be a currently enrolled HRT student at Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Students must sign in on the sign in sheet to be eligible to receive a ticket.
  • The tickets will be handed out by Ann Lara, or her chosen representative, at a time of her choosing during the posted hours of the event.
  • If your ticket is chosen as the winner you must present your winning ticket Ann Lara within seven days of the ticket being drawn.
  • Drawing will take place on Feb. 29. The winner will be selected by the dean or associate dean.
  • The winning ticket number/name will be sent out via e-mail and will be available with Desiree Baker at the front desk.
  • The Collins College has the right to change, substitute or cancel this giveaway at anytime.

Earn $300 for Your Collins Club!

Dues-paying club members will be able to support their favorite club by signing in at each event they attend. The club with the most participation (by percentage) will be rewarded by The Collins College granting their proposal. Check with your club leadership to see what you are playing for!

Club Participation Drive guidelines:

  • Clubs will get a chance to get credit for each events listed with the exception of the Career Expo, Graduating Senior Mixer, Mornings of Motivation, interview days and the Etiquette Dinner.
  • The prize for the club with the most participation will receive $300 toward their annual budget.
  • Participation will be calculated by the number of dues-paid club members (to be provided by HMC board) and the attendance at the Career Expo events. If a club has 100 members and 20 show up to event A, 10 to event B, and 30 to event C, they would have an overall 20% participation rate.
  • In the event of a tie the funds will be split evenly.
  • Students who belong to multiple clubs can sign in as members of multiple clubs or they may wish to choose just one club.
  • Sign-in sheets will be reviewed for accuracy at the discretion of the Career Services Coordinator and HMC board.
  • The Collins College has the right to change, substitute or cancel this participation drive at anytime.
