18th Annual Hospitality Career Expo: Feb. 17, 2011

The Collins College of Hospitality Management and the Cal Poly Pomona Career Center will host the 18th annual 2011 Hospitality Career Expo on Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The expo is the college’s largest one-day event for students and alumni to gain exposure to numerous hospitality companies. The expo will take place at The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch.

For Companies

This career fair is limited to 55 leading companies in the hospitality industry. This expo can be quite popular and space is limited.

Early-bird registration ends Jan. 20. Once the early-bird registration deadline passes, the cost will increase from $375 ($200 for government/non-profit organizations) to $425 ($250 for government/non-profit organizations).

There are several upcoming events that will help students prepare for the expo. Students should consider attending and participating in as many as their schedule permits to give themselves a competitive edge. This list will be updated as events are planned.

Feb. 1 – Rock Your Resume

Noon to 1 p.m., Wine Auditorium

This workshop assists students in developing a hospitality resume from scratch. It covers all the basics of how to organize one's information on paper with appropriate wording that will make a resume effective. If you have never written a resume or wish to take a fresh look at your resume this is a great workshop for you! Presented by Ann Lara.

Feb. 2 – Sodexo Information Session

Come hear a panel of industry experts give their insights into the employment market, resumes, interviewing and more. Students will be able to ask questions during the open forum portion of the presentation. Moderated by Ann Lara.

Feb. 9 – Job Search Strategies Workshop

Noon to 1 p.m., Wine Auditorium

Are you covering all your bases in the hospitality job search process? This workshop will cover numerous successful job strategies, as they relate to hospitality, to help you find that desired job. The speaker will address resumes, cover letters, internet resources, networking and more. Presented by Ann Lara.

Feb. 10 – Dress for Success Event

Noon to 1 p.m., Wine Auditorium

Learn the do’s and don’ts of professional business dress from a certified professional stylist. A student fashion show will accompany the presentation.

Feb. 15 – Prep for Career Day Workshop

Looking for a position or internship in field of hospitality? Come find out how to market yourself to employers at the Career Fair and learn how to have a “10-second interview.” Presented by Ann Lara.

Come interact with a variety of employers in the hospitality industry! Representatives from hotels, restaurants, clubs and many other areas of the field will be present to talk to students about current and future opportunities for employment and internships. Freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors are all encouraged to attend. Professional dress is required.

Alumni Bagel Mixer

8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Amemiya Boardroom

Dean Andy Feinstein and The Collins Hospitality Society will host a breakfast for alumni prior to the Hospitality Career Expo. The alumni mixer will start at 8:30 a.m. in the Amemiya Boardroom. Please e-mail Ann Lara at aelara@csupomona.edu by Wednesday, Feb. 9 if you plan to attend the mixer.

Disney College Program Information Session

6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Panda Express Classroom

Feb. 23 – Hire me! Interviewing Workshop

Noon to 1 p.m., Wine Auditorium

Nervous about what to say, how to act, or what to do on an interview? Learn effective strategies to develop strong interviewing skills. You will learn how to answer “tough” questions like “What are your weaknesses?” and “Why should I hire you over someone else?.” Presented by Ann Lara.

 

Feb. 24 – Employer Perspectives: Interviewing , Presented by Pacific Palms

Noon to 1 p.m., Wine Auditorium

Come learn the tips to mastering an interview from a Pacific Palms employment manager. Additionally, information about current employment opportunities and benefits of working for Pacific Palms will be presented.

 

 

 

 

We are giving away an iPad!

For events throughout Career Month we will be giving away raffle tickets to students who attend events. The more events you attend the better chance you have to win!  

iPad Giveaway guidelines:

  • Students can earn a maximum of one ticket per event at each of the events listed with the exception of the Career Expo, Graduating Senior Mixer, interview days and the Etiquette Dinner.
  • In order to be eligible to receive tickets and win, you must be a currently enrolled HRT student at Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Students must sign in on the sign in sheet to be eligible to receive a ticket.
  • The tickets will be handed out by Ann Lara, or her chosen representative, at a time of her choosing during the posted hours of the event. 
  • If your ticket is chosen as the winner you must present your winning ticket Ann Lara within 7 days of the ticket being drawn.
  • Drawing will take place on March 1st. The winner will be selected by the Dean or Assistant Dean.
  • The winning ticket number will be sent out via e-mail and will be available with Desiree at the front desk.  
  • The Collins College has the right to change, substitute or cancel this giveaway at anytime.

Earn $300 for your Collins club!

For our club participation drive each club was asked to submit a proposal on how to reward members who participate in Career Month. Due’s paying club members will be able to support their favorite club by signing in at each event they attend. The club with the most participation (by percentage) will be rewarded by The Collins College granting their proposal. Check with your club leadership to see what you are playing for.

Club Participation Drive guidelines:

  • Clubs will get a chance to get credit for each events listed with the exception of the Career Expo, Graduating Senior Mixer, interview days and the Etiquette Dinner.
  • The prize for the club with the most participation will receive $300 towards an activity, event, charity, or item of the clubs choosing. Clubs must have submitted a ½ page proposal for what their club would do with the funds if they won by Friday, January 21 at 4pm.
  • Participation will be calculated by the number of dues paid club members (to be provided by HMC board) and the attendance at the Career Expo events. If a club has 100 members and 20 show up to event A, 10 to event B, and 30 to event C, they would have an overall 20% participation rate.
  • In the event of a tie the funds will be split evenly.
  • Students who belong to multiple clubs can sign in as members of multiple clubs or they may wish to choose just one club.
  • Sign in sheets will be reviewed for accuracy at the discretion of the Career Services Coordinator and HMC board.
  • The Collins College has the right to change, substitute or cancel this participation drive at anytime.
