History of Partners in Education
Partners in Education (PIE) was established in 2004 primarily as a small advisory group to the Dean of the College of Education and Integrative Studies (CEIS) comprised of community business women and educational leaders. In its first year PIE raised over $100,000 and established an endowment to support the teaching profession in the Cal Poly Pomona region.
In 2005, PIE developed its bylaws and, with the approval of the PIE Board of Directors and the University President, became a campus-wide and community-based board. Today, there are over twenty Board members representing various sectors of business, academia, and education. The Board is dedicated to supporting excellence in education in the University service region as well as promoting excellence in the preparation of future teachers at Cal Poly Pomona. In collaboration with stakeholders, PIE also develops and promotes community-based programs that strengthen the education of the region’s students.
Some of the projects PIE has supported since its inception have been the partnership between the Pomona Public Library and the University’s Service Learning Center for a Homework Center at the library for local K-12 students; the co-sponsorship of the CEIS Teacher Credential Celebration; the creation of the PIE affiliate group to target teacher credential alumni and to host professional development workshops for K-12 educators; the establishment of a Sponsor a Future Program that has provided $5,000 scholarships to more than 80 future teachers; and the publication of a semi-annual newsletter focused on educational issues and PIE successes that is distributed to alumni, donors and friends of the university.
