College of Education & Integrative Studies

Our Impact

As of June 2013, 23 students have completed the GLGSA. Seventeen of them have been hired by the PUSD as school administrators or in various teacher leadership positions. One is a highly successful elementary principal, one has gone on to earn a doctorate in educational leadership, and two more are currently enrolled in educational leadership doctoral programs. According to PUSD Deputy Superintendent Stephanie Baker (who was one of the founding members of the GLGSA),

The Great Leaders for Great Schools program began as a collaboration between Cal Poly and Pomona Unified with the intent to expand our teachers' boundaries, build the capacity of our teacher leaders, and create a pool of successful candidates to populate our District's future administrative ranks. We have gained that and so much more.

We are an urban district serving a student population that is 82.5% Hispanic, 36% English learners, 77% socio-economically disadvantaged, and 9% disabled. In this challenging environment, the Great Leaders model has directly answered the specific needs of our students.

The program has provided leadership opportunities for our most successful teachers, many of whom are now our principals and assistant principals. It has deepened the foundation of professional development among out mentor principals and district administrators. We have benefited exponentially from the insights and resources that this program has made available. This model really does create Great Leaders for Great Schools.
