The Civil Engineering Department is the leader in polytechnic education, where hands-on learning is the foundation of a broad-based educational experience. The Civil Engineering undergradaute program, one of the largest undergraduate programs in the nation in terms of student numbers, currently has 1375 students. About 95 percent of them are from Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties due to the fact that the campus is located at the juncture of these four counties.
The success of our gradaute program results, to a great extent, from the solid curriculum that incorporates theory and practice in the learning-centered environment. Students are provided with opportunities to apply their knowledge in hands-on projects, collaborate with faculty members on research, and participate in valuable internships and service-learning programs.
Provide the best civil engineering learning experience.
To meet the challenges of an evolving society, we provide practice‐oriented civil
engineering education that fosters personal, professional and social responsibility;
technical excellence and creativity; and effective communication, teamwork and
leadership.

Dr. Seema Shah-Fairbank is one of the newest members of the Civil Engineering Department, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is an assistant professor in water resources. In addition, Seema is the recipient of an RBF fellowship. She will be teaching courses in hydrology, hydraulics and environmental engineering. She plans to work within our communities looking at developing solutions to river erosion and sedimentation. Seema Shah-Fairbank obtained her BS in Environmental Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 2001. Prior to attending graduate school at Colorado State University (CSU) she spent 3 years working as a Design Engineer for RBF Consulting in Storm Water Management. At RBF she worked on various flood control, hydrology and hydraulics projects. She is a Licensed Professional Engineer for the State of California. She completed her graduate studies in Civil Engineering at CSU with a MS in 2006 and PhD in2009, where she specialized in sediment transport and river mechanics. Dr. Seema Sah-Fairbank has already demonstarted as a valuable faculty member to expand hydorlogy expertise in Civil Engineering program. Current Cal Poly Pomona students may request a change of major to the BS Civil Engineering program. The process for doing so is described in the Major Change Polices and Procedures docuement.
Enrollments in our Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program has grown by 59 percent over the past year. We offer three emphasis areas: Geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering. Further information on may be found on our graduate program web page. We are now accepting applications for all three emphasis areas. It is best to apply online through the csumentor web site. Use major code 09081 and be sure to indicate the desired emphasis area in the application.
