Mikhail Gershfeld, SE was a member of our faculty in the 1980s, then went on to form a structural engineering consulting firm. Following a successful career as a practicing structural engineer, and service with APA - The Engineered Wood Association, he is now returning to Cal Poly Pomona as a full-time faculty member. He brings a wealth of practical experience, with particular expertise in the design of timber structures. |

Abdul Rashidi, PE has had a distinguished career as a water resources engineer, most recently with MWH. He has been the project manager of many large water and wastewater treatment projects in various parts of the world, and brings a wealth of expertise in both technical matters and project management. He has been teaching for us on a part-time basis for many years, and is now joining us as a full-time faculty member.. |
Our Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program now has two new emphasis areas: Geotechnical engineering and transportation engineering. These new emphasis areas join our existing structural engineering emphasis. Further information on may be found on our graduate program web page.
We are now accepting applications for all three emphasis areas. It is best to apply online through the csumentor web site. Use major code 09081 and be sure to indicate the desired emphasis area in the application.
Dr. Farran and 25 civil engineering students completed our first civil engineering study abroad trip this past summer. They visited the United Kingdom, where they studied bridge engineering. The trip included several field trips to noteworthy bridges in the UK.
We are in the process of planning our second annual study abroad trip, which will consist of a trip to China in Summer 2008. This trip will have a transportation engineering focus. More details will be announced as our plans become finalized.
The Cal Poly Pomona Concrete Canoe Team placed 8th in the June 2007 National Concrete Canoe Competion in Seattle. Over 200 concrete canoes competed at the various regional competitions, 22 of whom advanced to the national level.

Our seventh civil engineering student club was recently chartered. The Cal Poly Pomona student chapter of the California Geotechnical Engineers Association is the first such student chapter, and is associated with the statewide CGEA. This new club will provide more opportunities for interaction between students and practicing professionals. The Southern California CGEA professionals held their regional meeting with our student chapter at Kellogg West on September 12.
Our other student clubs are the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Structural Engineers Association, the Society of Environmental Engineers, the California Land Surveyors Association, and Chi Epsilon.
Our Fall 2007 PE exam review course will be held from September 11 to October 18, 2007. This course is intended for engineers preparing to take the October 26, 2007 California civil engineering PE exam. Further details and registration information is available from our brochure.
