Potential Academic Calendar Conversion

Cal Poly Pomona has been considering whether to convert from its existing quarter-based academic calendar to a semester-based calendar. In 2010, the university’s Academic Senate appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on Potential Academic Calendar Conversion (AHCPACC) to oversee this investigation and make a recommendation about whether the university should convert to a semester-based calendar. AHCPACC has now completed its investigation and made a recommendation to the Senate.

The ACPACC prepared two reports:  the majority report and the minority report which were submitted to the Academic Senate on 1/31/11. The first reading of these reports occurred on February 9, 2011. A special Academic Senate meeting on this topic is scheduled for February 23, 2011. Refer to our "Schedule of Activities" page for a complete list of future dates.

The Committee majority and minority have prepared more detailed explanations of their reasoning. These are available via the following links:

On this website you will find all the documents that AHCPACC has produced in fulfilling its charge from the Senate, as well as links to sources of information about conversion developed by other universities that have considered the same question. The members of AHCPACC strongly encourage the entire campus community to read through the information provided on this web site as they study this question. Below are links that may be of particular interest:

  • Campus Surveys. AHCPACC released surveys to the campus community in November. Survey results were obtained for faculty, staff and students.
  • The Questions and Answers document explains the timeline and process for how the decision whether to convert will be made, as well as providing a wealth of information about the differences between the two calendars and how conversion might proceed should the campus decide to make the change. All members of the committee have agreed that the answers contained in this document are accurate and unbiased to the best of our ability to ascertain. Sources for many of the answers are provided.
