College of Engineering Symposium Day Information

Date: May 28, 2010; 8:00-12:00am

Presentation Format: Students will present their senior projects as an oral presentation, or in a poster format or both. Students should see their senior project advisors to determine their presentation format.

Tips for Effective Technical Presentations (both oral and poster):
Michael Alley's Book The Craft of Scientific Presentations and accompanying website (note the arrow at the bottom of the page) is highly recommended for tips on how to give an effective technical presentation. On the website you can find sample power point slides and technical posters. An additional sample poster can be found here.

Poster Presentations:

  • The poster session will last from 8am - 12am. The poster should be manned throughout this time period unless you are also giving an oral presentation. Team members can arrange shifts. You may set up your poster at 8am.
  • Poster presentations will take place in rooms: 9-401, 9-405
  • Your room assignment will be printed in the technical program.
  • Posters should be displayed on a standard trifold display board or a regular poster of the same size. Posters should adhere to good technical presentation practice
  • Tables will be available for trifold display boards

Oral presentations:

  • Oral presentation sessions will last from 8am-12am.
  • Presentations will be 35 minutes long and should include time for answering questions. There will be 10 minutes in between presentations.
  • Presenters should arrive before their session starts and download their presentations.
  • Rooms will be equipped with a PC, an overhead projector and have internet access.
  • Presentations should adhere to good technical presentation practice
  • Your room assignment and time slot will be printed in the technical program.

Final Technical Report:

  • For your final Senior project write-up you may find Michael Alley's Book, The Craft of Scientific Writing , and accompanying website to be helpful. Additionally you may wish to use the IEEE format for your final paper. The IEEE Author Digital Toolbox provides sample temples as well as a style manual for the IEEE format.
