STEMS: Students' Experiences in Math and Science Study

Researchers and colleagues: If you would like more information about the study, such as the project summary, please contact the PI at bjcasad@csupomona.edu.

Potential participants, please read:

What is it?

We are conducting an important study on Students' Experiences in Math and Science. The purpose of the study is to assess multiple dimensions of experience, including students’ attitudes, classroom experiences, and Cal Poly curriculum. You will be asked to complete an online survey that takes about 60 minutes. In part 2, you will attend a lab session in which you will be asked to do the following:

1)  Allow the experimenter to apply physiological sensors so that your heart rate and blood pressure can be measured throughout the study
2)  Complete a series of questionnaires including academic assessments

Who is Eligible?

Cal Poly Pomona students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. You must have at least two years of study left at Cal Poly.

What Do I Get?

You earn $15 for each online survey (one per quarter) and $10 for each online computer task (fall quarter), $30 for a 90 minute lab session, and $30 for a phone interview. Each year you can earn a total of $55-$115 for a total of $110-$230 over the two-year period of the study. Cal Poly students will be issued checks in the mail from the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation.

Where Does the Study Take Place?

The first part of the study is done online. The second part, the lab session, is done at the Cal Poly Pomona campus, in Building 1 Room 220B.

How do I Sign Up?

To find out if you are eligible, complete our brief 18-question online survey located at http://csupomona.sona-systems.com/. When you reach the homepage, click on the link for "New Participant:  Request an Account Here". Type in your first initial and last name to be your username (e.g., jsmith). When the system prompts you to “select a course” choose BHS 400-01 - Independent Study (Casad). After you have set up your account, the system will email you a password to your csupomona email address. When you receive your password, login to the system at http://csupomona.sona-systems.com/. You will be asked if you want to participate in the “Prescreen”, say Yes as this determines your eligibility for the study.

After you have completed all the Prescreening Survey questions, hit "Record Responses." If you meet the eligibility requirements for the STΣMS: Students’ Experiences in Math and Science Study, you will see the experiment name listed. Click on the link for STΣMS: Students' Experiences in Math and Science Study Part 1 Survey or STΣMS: Students' Experiences in Math and Science Study Part 1 Survey* whichever link appears for you under the list of studies. Take this 45 minute online survey. Then you will see STΣMS Study Part 2 appear in the list of studies. Click this link and choose a day and time that fits your schedule and click “Sign Up.”

Click this link and choose a day and time that fits your schedule and click “Sign Up.” You will receive an email from the researcher about 2 days before your appointment with a reminder and more details about your appointment.
