Instructions for Poster Presentations
for the 1998 Annual Meeting of the Southern California Academy of Sciences,
May 1, 1998
Thank you for submitting a poster for presentation at the 1998 annual meeting of the Southern California Academy of Sciences, to be held at California State Polytechnic University Pomona. Poster presentations offer a great opportunity for immediate interaction between the presenter and the audience and produce a direct exchange of ideas with those interested in your research. A larger audience is likely to view a poster, and a poster allows considerable flexibility in presentation, as well as being (usually) less stressful for the presenter. This dynamic communication mode is enthusiastically encouraged.
Please read and follow the instructions:
Poster presentations are scheduled to be displayed Friday evening 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the University Union Gallery. All posters must be mounted in the display area between 3:00 and 4:45 p.m., to remain displayed until 7:00 p.m. You must be on hand to present and discuss your poster between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. if your poster number is odd or between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. if your poster number is even (see list in Program). Posters must be removed immediately after the session. Prior to set-up, you may leave your poster in the University Union Sierra Madre Room near the Gallery, which will be open all day Friday.
Poster Preparation:
P>Posters can be no larger than 32" x 40" and will be displayed on easels. Easels will be provided. Presenters must furnish boards as well as any pins, tacks, tape, or other materials needed. You are strongly urged to make and bring your poster on one large board that can simply be placed on an easel for display. All materials should be well attached to the board. ONE easel will be allocated per poster, and will be numbered as in the attached list.
Suggestions for Preparing Posters:
- It is strongly recommended that your poster be prepared on a single sheet of mat board or foam core board approximately 32" x 40".
- Your poster, including graphs, legends, introductory and concluding material, will be viewed from a distance of 3 feet or more. To be readable, the smallest lettering should be at least 6 mm high (18 point). Titles should be at least 1" (72 point).
- Matte finish photographs are more easily viewed than those with a glossy surface.
- Avoid unnecessary details in preparing charts, drawings and illustrations. Try to keep the presentation as simple as possible. The figures, tables and summary should cover about 50% of the poster area.
- Your poster should be self-explanatory so that you are free to discuss and answer questions from your colleagues. The poster session potentially provides informal discussion on a one to one basis, or for small groups. However, this becomes difficult if you are devoting most of your time to explaining your poster to a long line of visitors. A pad of paper may come in handy for explaining various points.
- Arrange your poster in columns rather than in rows (see below). It is easier for viewers to scan a poster by moving up and down as they are walking along its length rather than zig-zagging back and forth in front of it. The sequence of illustrations should be indicated with numbers or figures at least 2 cm high, preferably in bold print. An introduction should be placed at the upper left, and a conclusion at the lower right, both in large type. Remember that illustrations may be viewed from a distance.
- Each figure or table should have a heading of one or two lines in large type (8 mm) that provides a brief (one or two lines) descriptive message. More detailed information should be provided in a legend in smaller type below the figure. The legend should contain commentary that would ordinarily appear in the body of the manuscript.
