Animal science is a scientific study of animals and animal products. The department curriculum emphasizes management practices involved with the selection, feeding, breeding, production, marketing and utilization of domestic animals. The courses offered by the department are designed to qualify urban students for employment in the science and business phases of the animal industry. Practical laboratory experience reinforces classroom instruction in the various production courses which, coupled with a broad science background, prepares students for employment in a wide variety of animal related occupations.
The Animal Industry-Agribusiness Option emphasizes preparation for management positions in the production and marketing of animal agri-business products. Particular emphasis is given to agri-businesses needing animal expertise as part of their management or marketing team. The option is of particular value to the student planning to teach agriculture at the secondary level or to serve in less developed countries.
The Animal Industry-Equine Option is designed to prepare students for employment in related agri-business opportunities in the equine industry. The option combines coursework in equine production, nutrition, genetics, and diseases, with studies in the management aspects of an equine enterprise.
The Pre-Veterinary Science/Graduate School Option satisfies requirements for admission to veterinary or graduate school, for related medical technical fields and for graduate study in animal nutrition, meat science, animal breeding and animal physiology.
The Animal Health Science degree prepares graduates to become veterinary nurses and to sit for state and national animal health accreditation agencies and licensing agency exams. Graduates with this option can pursue careers as veterinary assistants in public and private facilities or as veterinary technologists in public health organizations and research institutions. For the student interested in meat science and processing, specialized courses are available. A student may develop a program emphasizing meat science by consulting with the appropriate departmental advisor. Flexibility in course requirements enables students to select species related electives in beef cattle, sheep, swine, dairy or meat science programs. Individual programs may be developed by approval of a department advisor.
Non-majors may elect to obtain an Animal Science Minor by completing a minimum of 31 units of required courses.
The Physiology Minor is an interdisciplinary program which can be elected by students majoring in any field. It is particularly appropriate for students majoring in Animal Science. Its purpose is to assist students interested in physiology to discover and prepare for careers in biomedical fields utilizing a knowledge of physiology. Students gain a broad basic background, then tailor a program of advanced courses to suit their goals.
The Quantitative Research Minor is another interdisciplinary program appropriate for animal science majors. Its purpose is to prepare students to conduct quantitative analyses in their field. Students acquire practical experience using statistics, principles of experimental design, survey and data analysis techniques.
