Already
the most successful volleyball coach in Cal Poly Pomona history,
Rosie Wegrich enters her 13th season with the Broncos hoping
to lead the program back into the postseason.
Wegrich
came to Cal Poly Pomona after a successful and lengthy career
in NCAA Division I and she has continued that success with
the Broncos. After a rare down year in 2001, Wegrich has orchestrated
a dramatic turnaround that has seen the Broncos win 39 matches
in the past two seasons. The 39 wins – the Broncos were
20-11 in 2002 and 19-11 in 2003 – are the most over
a two-year stretch since 1993-94.
The Broncos
finished 2003 on an upswing, winning their final four matches
for a second straight year, and narrowly missed reaching the
NCAA Division II playoffs. Six teams from the Pacific Region
advanced and the Broncos were rated seventh in the final poll.
Cal Poly Pomona swept Cal State L.A. for the first time since
1996 and knocked off Cal State San Bernardino in a thrilling
five-game match in Darlene May Gym while the Coyotes were
ranked No. 1 in the nation.
The all-time
winningest coach in Bronco volleyball history recorded a milestone
victory when the Broncos defeated Cal State L.A. in an exciting
five-game match on Nov. 15, 2002 in Kellogg Gym for Wegrich’s
200th win as Cal Poly Pomona’s head coach. The Broncos’
20 wins in 2002 were the most for the program since 1997 and
represented a huge turnaround from an injury-plagued 10-20
campaign in 2001.
Wegrich
added a big milestone to her coaching legacy at the end of
the 2000 season with her 500th career victory. The Broncos
provided Wegrich with that memorable win by beating Grand
Canyon University in four games on Nov. 11, 2000. In 29 years
as a college head coach, Wegrich is 549-407-10 and eighth
all-time in wins among Division II coaches.
Tradition,
success and pride are evident when it comes to Wegrich and
Cal Poly Pomona volleyball. In her first 12 years as the Bronco
Head Coach, Wegrich has compiled a 220-148 record and averaged
18 wins per season. She has guided five teams to the NCAA
tournament (1992-94, 1996-97) and has enabled Cal Poly Pomona
to be considered one of the top programs in the nation. During
her reign, the Broncos have been honored with five All-America
awards, 10 all-region awards and 31 all-conference awards.
Wegrich
came to Pomona after a 17-year tenure at the NCAA Division
I ranks. A winner from the beginning, Wegrich led the University
of Minnesota to a 71-30-1 record in two years (1975-76) before
heading to the University of Arizona for the next 15 years
(1977-91). Under Wegrich's tutelage, the Arizona volleyball
team made 12 trips to post-season play, including a string
of nine consecutive berths to the NCAA Tournament. After taking
nationally-ranked (16th) Arizona to the post-season tournament
for the 11th time in 1989, she was named the Northwest Region
Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
While at Arizona, she amassed a record of 258-229-9.
Wegrich
has coached two former United States National and Olympic
team members, Melissa McLinden and Caren Kemner, two Canadian
National team members as well as seven All-Americans.
As a player,
Wegrich competed collegiately for San Diego State where she
captained the Aztecs. She also represented the USA in competition
against Mexico and Canada and then embarked on a distinguished
six-year career in the International Volleyball Association.
A three-time recipient of the IVA's Most Valuable Female Player
Award (1977, 1978, 1979), Wegrich was also a member of the
league's All-Pro team for four years (1976-79).
She earned
her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the University of
California, Los Angeles in 1975 and completed her master's
degree at the University of Arizona in 1992.
One of
the nation's most respected coaches, Wegrich is very active
on the camp and clinic circuit. Over the past several years,
she has made presentations at the National Coaches’
Clinic and the Colorado Springs Volleyball Camp. She also
coached the South Team in the 1983 Volleyball Festival to
a silver medal. Most recently, Wegrich was a featured coach
in the Sports Imports publication. Wegrich has also attended
the Daiei Japanese Club team practices and utilizes this style
in her coaching technique.
