Broncos Post CCAA Win Over CSULA
Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis team beats Golden Eagles, 8-1

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team took a firm hold on second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a win over Cal State L.A. on Tuesday.

The Broncos won all three contests and went on to an 8-1 victory over the Golden Eagles Tuesday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Cal Poly Pomona (12-5, 6-2) now leads Cal State L.A. by two matches in the race for second place in the conference. UC San Diego continues to lead the conference with a 7-0 record.

Cal Poly Pomona, ranked 25th in the nation, got off to a quick start with three wins in the doubles. Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, Sara Jex (Sr., Los Olivos, Saddleback JC) and Renee Paquillo (So., Fullerton, Rosary HS) won at No. 2 doubles, 8-4 and Ellyn Caprara (Fr., Carlsbad, The Woodlands HS, TX) and Jenny Tsia (Fr., Artesia, Cerritos HS) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.

Cal State L.A. (6-5, 4-4) got its only point at No. 5 singles, where Kimmy Barnes defeated Caprara, 6-2, 6-4.

Cal Poly Pomona got wins from Feliz at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, Holmberg at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4, Paquillo at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-3, Tsai at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2 and Jex at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino.

Abilene Christian Wins Xenia Tourney
Cal Poly Pomona wins its final match at memorial tournament

POMONA -- No. 12 Abilene Christian defeated No. 7 Rollins in the championship match of the 2005 Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Abilene Christian won two of the three doubles contests and then won five of the six singles matches to win the three-day tournament that featured five nationally-ranked NCAA Division II teams. In other matches Sunday, No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 5-0, No. 13 Hawaii-Hilo defeated Grand Canyon, 7-2 and No. 12 UC San Diego defeated NAIA power Azusa Pacific, 5-4.

Abilene Christian won its first two contests by 5-4 scores against Hawaii Hilo and UC San Diego before defeating Rollins in the championship match.

The host Broncos (11-5) beat California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Bakersfield for the third time this season. The former Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis star was a two-time individual national champion (1987, 1988) and a three-time All-American (1986-88). Anastasiadou also earned all-CCAA honors three times and helped the Broncos to a conference title and a pair of second-place finishes. The Broncos finished third in the nation all three years.

Rollins, Abilene Christian Advance To Finals
Nationally-ranked teams to battle for Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tourney Title

POMONA -- No. 7 Rollins and No. 12 Abilene Christian won semi-final contests Saturday to advance to the championship match of the 2005 Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament at Cal Poly Pomona.

Rollins defeated Azusa Pacific, 6-3, while Abilene Christian won by a 5-4 score for the second straight day, this time over No. 10 UC San Diego at the Kellogg Tennis Complex.

In other matches Saturday, No. 13 Hawaii Hilo defeated No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona, 7-2 and Grand Canyon upended Cal State Bakersfield, 7-2.

The championship match will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Azusa Pacific will face UC San Diego in the third-place match Sunday, Hawaii Hilo will face Grand Canyon for fifth place at 9 a.m. and Cal Poly Pomona will face Cal State Bakersfield for seventh place at 1 p.m.

The Broncos fell behind early against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday and never recovered. Cal Poly Pomona lost all three doubles contests and then managed only two wins in the singles competitions. Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4 and Ellyn Caprara (Fr., Carlsbad, The Woodlands HS, TX) won at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-3 for the only Bronco points.

In the closest match of the day, Abilene Christian won two of three doubles contests and split the six singles matches to edge UC San Diego. Rollins won all three doubles contests and split the six singles matches to win against Azusa Pacific and Grand Canyon won two doubles points and five singles matches to win against Cal State Bakersfield.

POMONA -- Rollins, Hawaii-Hilo, Abilene Christian and UC San Diego were the first-day winners Friday at the 2005 Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament at Cal Poly Pomona.

The host Broncos, ranked 25th in the NCAA Division II, fell to No. 10 UC San Diego, 6-3, in the featured match of the day. Cal Poly Pomona (10-4, 5-2) had a seven-match winning streak snapped by the Tritons. The match was also a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

In other matches, No. 7 Rollins beat Grand Canyon, 7-2; Azusa Pacific, a nationally-ranked NAIA school, defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 9-0 and No. 12 Abilene Christian edged No. 13 Hawaii Hilo, 5-4.

In semi-final contests on Saturday, Rollins will face Azusa Pacific and Abilene Christian will meet UC San Diego. Grand Canyon will face Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly Pomona will host Hawaii Hilo in other contests.

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team won its seventh straight match Thursday on the eve of the annual Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament.

The Broncos swept past the University of Montevallo, 9-0, in a non-conference match Thursday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Cal Poly Pomona (10-3) will now set its attention on California Collegiate Athletic Association leader UC San Diego. The Broncos and Tritons will meet in a first-round match at the Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament Friday at 2 p.m. The annual tournament is a tribute to Anastasiadou, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1989 at the age of 22. The former Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis star was a two-time individual national champion (1987, 1988) and a three-time All-American (1986-88).

Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego will be joined by Rollins, Grand Canyon, Cal State Bakersfield, Azusa Pacific, Abilene Christian and Hawaii-Hilo. The three-day tourney will continue on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.

Cal Poly Pomona senior wins conference’s weekly honor

WALNUT CREEK -- Cal Poly Pomona’s Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) has been named the Wilson California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 21-28.

Feliz led the Broncos to wins last week over Sonoma State (5-4) and Western New Mexico (8-1). She won both her singles matches at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, King Kekaulike HS) for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles.

Feliz beat Sonoma State’s Brianna Bailey, 6-3, 6-0 and Western New Mexico’s Tereza Pilatova, 6-0, 6-0 in her singles matches last week. Feliz and Holmberg won their two doubles contests, 8-1 over Sonoma State and 8-0 against Western New Mexico.

Feliz becomes the second Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis player to earn weekly honors this season. Holmberg won the conference award for the week of Feb. 14-20.

Feliz has compiled a 5-1 record in six conference matches so far at No. 1 singles and helped the Broncos to a 9-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the CCAA. The Broncos are currently second in the conference, one match behind conference-leading UC San Diego.

Cal Poly Pomona women’s team picks up big CCAA victory

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team earned a crucial California Collegiate Athletic Association victory and then picked up a bonus non-conference win as well Saturday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex.

The Broncos swept the three doubles contests and then held on for a 5-4 win over Sonoma State in a conference match in the morning and then rolled past Western New Mexico, 8-1, in an afternoon match.

The Broncos are now alone in second place in the CCAA with a 5-1 record and improved their overall mark to 8-3.

Cal Poly Pomona got off to a good start against the Seawolves and posted three doubles wins. Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, Sara Jex (Sr., Los Olivos, Saddleback JC) and Renee Paquillo (So., Fullerton, Rosary HS) won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3 and Erica Lin (So., Arcadia, Arcadia HS) and Ellyn Caprara (Fr., Carlsbad, The Woodlands HS, TX) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.

The Broncos then got wins from Feliz at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0 over Sonoma State’s Brianna Bailey and from Jenny Tsai (Fr., Artesia, Cerritos HS) at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Four of the six singles matches went three sets and the Seawolves won three of them.

The Broncos then beat Western New Mexico, 8-1. Feliz and Holmberg won at No. 1 doubles, 8-0 and Jex and Paquillo won at No. 2 doubles, 9-8. The Broncos then swept the singles competitions, all in straight sets.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday with a home match against the University of Montevallo.

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona's women's tennis team picked up its second NCAA Division II West Region victory in as many days.

The Broncos won all three doubles contests and four of the six singles matches and defeated former California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Grand Canyon, 7-2. Cal Poly Pomona is now 7-3 on the season.

Broncos post 6-3 conference win over Cal State L.A.

LOS ANGELES – Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team picked up another California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Friday afternoon.

The Broncos won two of the three doubles contests and four of the six singles matches and took a 6-3 decision over Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles. Cal Poly Pomona (6-3, 4-1) won for the fourth time in its first five conference matches.

Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and teamed with Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) for a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Holmberg won her match at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 1-6, (10-6).

Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis team prevails in rematch, 8-1

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team completed a season sweep of California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal State Bakersfield.

The Broncos (5-3, 3-1) won all three doubles contests and five of the six singles matches and defeated the Roadrunners for the second time in conference action, 8-1. Cal Poly Pomona won the first meeting, 7-2, in Pomona on Feb. 26.

Cal Poly Pomona got off to a quick start by winning all three doubles contests. Cal Poly Pomona women’s team falls to No. 9 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team came up short against one of the nation’s top teams Wednesday afternoon.

The Broncos lost all three doubles matches and prevailed in only one singles match and fell to No. 9 UC San Diego, 8-1, at the Northview Tennis Courts on the UC San Diego campus. Cal Poly Pomona falls to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. UC San Diego is 6-0 and 3-0 in conference.

Cal Poly Pomona lost all three doubles contests by identical 8-5 scores.

The Broncos’ only point came at No. 1 singles, where Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) defeated Marsha Malinow, 5-7, 7-5, 10-3. The Broncos won two of three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests to beat Alliant University, 6-3, at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Cal Poly Pomona, after dropping its first two matches of the season, is now 3-2.

Cal Poly Pomona took the lead with a pair of victories in doubles. The Broncos won two of three doubles contests and captured five of six singles matches and earned a 7-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. Cal Poly Pomona (2-2, 2-0) has won its last two matches after opening the season with losses at Division I UC Riverside and NAIA power Azusa Pacific.

Cal Poly Pomona got off to a good start in the doubles. SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team got its 2005 California Collegiate Athletic Association season off to a good start.

The Broncos swept the three double contests and won five of the six singles matches and downed Cal State San Bernardino, 8-1, Wednesday in San Bernardino. Cal Poly Pomona (1-2, 1-0) picked up its first victory of the season after losing to Division I UC Riverside and NAIA power Azusa Pacific.

The best match of the day took place at No. 1 doubles where Cal Poly Pomona’s Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) saved a match point and rallied for a 9-7 victory over Cal State San Bernardino’s Jennifer Joy and Carissa Cooks.

AZUSA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team came up short against another tough opponent Wednesday afternoon.

The Broncos dropped two of three doubles contests and lost five of six singles matches and fell to Azusa Pacific, 7-2, Wednesday at Citrus College. Cal Poly Pomona, which lost to Division I UC Riverside last week in its season opener, drops to 0-2.

Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI) won her match at No. 2 singles over Azusa Pacific’s Peggy Bell, 7-6, 3-2, ret. Holmberg and Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) lost a tight match at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Feliz lost to Azusa Pacific’s Jennifer Dao, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.

Broncos Conclude Play At Cal State L.A.
Cal Poly Pomona men’s and women’s tennis teams compete in tourney

LOS ANGELES -- Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s tennis teams concluded play at the Cal State L.A. Tennis Invitational on Saturday.

Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) lost to Cal State L.A.’s Charise Godoy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a quarterfinal match in the women’s singles Flights 1-2. Sara Jex (Sr., Los Olivos, Saddleback JC) won her second-round singles match in Flights 5-6 over Stephanie Hammond of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, but then lost to Dana Popeseu of Cal State L.A. in the semis, 6-4, 6-2. Ellyn Caprara (Fr., Carlsbad, The Woodlands, TX) won her second-round match in Flights 5-6 over Christiana Scolinos of Azusa Pacific, 6-3, 7-5, but then lost to Lisa Atkins of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-0, 6-0. Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) and Renee Paquillo (So., Fullerton, Rosary HS) both dropped consolation bracket matches on Saturday.

On the men’s side, Alan Chang (Sr., Torrance, Cal State L.A.) and Andy Chang (Sr., Torrance, Cal State L.A.) lost consolation bracket matches on Saturday to conclude play in the tourney. The Chang twins also lost their second-round doubles match.

The Bronco men will return to action on Thursday with a home match against UC San Diego, while the women will play next on Wednesday at Azusa Pacific.

Broncos Drop Opener To Highlanders
Cal Poly Pomona women fall to Division I UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE -- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team endured a tough start to its 2005 season.

The Broncos lost all six singles contests and the doubles point and fell to Division I UC Riverside, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center courts at UC Riverside. The Highlanders improve to 1-1 on the season.

Cal Poly Pomona’s No. 1 doubles team of Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) lost to UC Riverside’s top team, 8-4. Sara Jex (Sr., Los Olivos, Saddleback JC) and Renee Paquillo (So., Fullerton, Rosary HS) lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, while Erica Lin (So., Arcadia, Arcadia HS) and Ellyn Caprara (Fr., Carlsbad, The Woodlands HS, TX) lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

Feliz fell at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1; Holmberg lost at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2; Paquillo lost at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2; Lin lost at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1; Caprara lost at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-2 and Jex lost at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Cal Poly Pomona will compete next at the Cal State L.A. Tournament beginning on Friday.

Feliz, Holmberg Fall In ITA Final
Cal Poly Pomona doubles team reaches regional championship match

LA JOLLA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s Dehlia Feliz and Katrina Holmberg made it to the ITA West Region women’s doubles championship match for the second straight year, but the results were decidedly different this year.

The defending ITA West Region champions fell in the championship match Saturday to BYU-Hawaii’s top-seeded Jing Jing Liu and Adrienn Hegedus, 8-1, Saturday at UC San Diego. Feliz and Holmberg entered the tournament as the No. 3 seeds. Last season, Feliz and Holmberg won the ITA regional crown at Cal Poly Pomona and represented the Broncos in the national championships.

Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) reached the regional championship match with easy wins over two teams from UC San Diego and another from Cal State L.A.

In other action on Saturday, Renee Paquillo (So., Fullerton, Rosary HS) fell in the consolation final to Leigh Roberts of UC San Diego, 6-1, 6-2. Paquillo advanced to the championship match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Katie McKee of UC San Diego.

Feliz, Holmberg Advance To ITA Final
Cal Poly Pomona doubles team reaches regional championship match

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona’s Dehlia Feliz and Katrina Holmberg will have a chance to defend their Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region doubles championship.

Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS), the 2003 ITA West Region doubles champs, will defend their title Saturday afternoon against No. 1 seed Jing Jing Liu and Adrienn Hegedus of BYU Hawaii. The winner will advance to the national championships later this month.
Feliz and Holmberg, the No. 3 seeds, advanced by defeating Cal State L.A.’s Kim Godoy and Tracey Takeshita, 8-1, and then taking out a pair of UC San Diego teams, Jasmin Dao-Katie McKee, 8-4, and Siddiqui-Bronowicki, 8-4. Siddiqui and Bronowicki were seeded second.

In other results Friday, Feliz fell to No. 3 seed Medina Sharma in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles draw, while Holmberg lost to Grand Canyon’s Nikita Bhardwaj in the round of 16. Renee Paquillo (So., Fullerton, Rosary HS) advanced to the consolation semis with wins over Erin Kramer of Sonoma State and Kim Coulson, also of Sonoma State.

Andy Chang (Sr., Torrance, Cal State L.A.) and Alan Chang (Sr., Torrance, Cal State L.A.) lost in their men's singles consolation matches Saturday.
