Cal Poly
Pomona’s women’s tennis team has reached the NCAA
Division II playoffs three consecutive years and will be trying
to make it four straight years in 2005.
The Broncos, the CCAA champions in 2003, were hit hard by
graduation and unexpected departures prior to 2004, but kept
their postseason string alive. With a veteran team led by
senior Dehlia Feliz and junior Katrina Holmberg, the Broncos
are optimistic about the 2004-2005 season.
Sandy Kriezel, the CCAA Women’s Tennis Coach of the
Year in 2002 and 2003, returns for her seventh season as the
Broncos’ head coach. She has compiled a 64-60 record
in her first six years as the Cal Poly Pomona head coach.
The Broncos were 8-12 in 2004 and finished fifth in the CCAA
with a 4-4 mark. The Broncos advanced to the NCAA Division
II playoffs and lost to eventual national champion BYU-Hawaii
in the first round, 5-0.
Cal Poly Pomona enters the 2004-05 season ranked 40th in the
nation by the ITA and seventh in the West Region. Feliz was
ranked 19th in the nation in singles and the doubles team
of Feliz and Holmberg were rated eighth in the nation. The
Broncos’ top doubles duo became the first players from
Cal Poly Pomona in at least nine years to advance to the national
championships in Corpus Christi after winning the ITA Fall
Regional in 2003.
Feliz and Holmberg advanced to the ITA Fall Regional finals
for the second straight year in October of 2004, but fell
in the final to the No. 1-ranked team in the nation from BYU-Hawaii.
Cal Poly Pomona's women's tennis program has a long tradition
of success. The Broncos captured four team national championships
and have had 42 women's tennis All-Americans.
