Media Guide
After
finishing the 2003 season with a rush to qualify for the CCAA
Championship Tournament for a record sixth straight season,
Cal Poly Pomona's women's soccer team looks to continue its
winning ways in 2004.
Newly elected Hall of Famer Paul Caligiuri returns for his
third season as the head coach and hopes to guide the Broncos
back into the NCAA Division II playoffs and continue the program's
impressive record of success. Caligiuri, the former Los Angeles
Galaxy star and United States national player, was elected
to the U.S. Hall of Fame this summer. He will be formally
inducted with Michelle Akers and Eric Wynalda in October.
The Broncos won their final three regular-season matches to
qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament in 2003, where
they lost to tournament host Cal State Dominguez Hills in
the first round, 2-1. Cal Poly Pomona returns seven starters
from last year's team, including senior Lisa Araujo, who has
earned All-CCAA honors the past three seasons.
The
Broncos have established themselves as one of the top programs
in the nation. The highlight came in 1999 when the Broncos,
led by NCAA Division II Player of the Year Ruth Vant
Land, advanced to the Division II championship game. It was
the programs first postseason experience. Vant
Land, who was a three-time All-American, concluded her career
in 2000. The Broncos also reached the NCAA playoffs in 2001
and advanced to the West Region championship game.

2003 Recap: After once again battling injuries to several
key playes, Cal Poly Pomona's women's soccer team finished
with a flourish and qualified for the CCAA Championship Tournament
for the sixth straight season. The Broncos are the only women's
team in the conference to qualify for the tournament all six
seasons it has been in existence. A late-season three-game
winning streak over Grand Canyon (2-1), Cal State San Bernardino
(6-1) and UC San Diego (2-1) pushed the Broncos into the tourney.
Cal Poly Pomona lost to tournament host Cal State Dominguez
Hills, 2-1, to end the season. Senior Michelle McConnell led
the team in scoring with eight goals and nine assists and
finished her career as the Broncos' No. 2 all-time scorer.
She also tied Ruth Van't Land-Parkes' career record of 29
assists. Junior Lisa Araujo was second on the team in scoring
with six goals and 12 points, while Erica Rodriguez and Bethany
Inoshita finished with 10 points each. Sophomore goalie Vanessa
Richardson made 70 saves and had a goals against average of
