Cal Poly
Pomona’s men’s tennis team continues to maintain
its standing as one of the best teams in the ITA West Region.
The Broncos have recorded 11 winning seasons in the past 12
years and are routinely ranked among the top teams in the
nation.
The Broncos
uncharacteristically dipped below .500 in 2003-04 and compiled
an 8-12 overall record. Among the top wins for Cal Poly Pomona
last season were 5-4 victories over Division I Villanova,
regional rival Sonoma State and NAIA program Westmont.
David Nguyen carried on the fine tradition of talented No.
1 singles players for Cal Poly Pomona and went 18-8 overall,
13-7 at No. 1 singles. Nguyen also earned the NCAA Division
II West Region 2004 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Collegiate Award winner
for leadership and sportsmanship by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association.
Sandy Kriezel begins her seventh season as the Broncos’
head coach. Cal Poly Pomona is 68-53 in her first six seasons
leading the program.
Even though the Broncos lose Nguyen and several other mainstays
from last year’s squad, several talented players do
remain. Senior twins Andy and Alan Chang are expected to hold
down the top two singles spots, while veterans Seth Lewkow,
Nicholas Doan and Nico Cifarelli also return. Top newcomers
include Tyrone Wang and Antonio Del Hierro.
The Broncos play their home matches at the Kellogg Tennis
Complex.
