Cal Poly Pomona’s Dustin Venegas earns second-team all-conference honors

WALNUT CREEK – Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team had three players honored Thursday night when the California Collegiate Athletic Association announced its 2004 All-CCAA teams.

Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) earned second-team honors in voting done by the conference coaches. Teammates Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) and Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) earned honorable mention. Cardenas received All-CCAA honors for the third consecutive year.

Cal State Dominguez Hills’ Kei Kamara was named the CCAA Player of the Year, while Cal State L.A.’s Chris Chamides was named the Coach of the Year. Cal State Bakersfield’s Jonas Nilsson was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year.

Venegas led the Broncos in scoring with six goals and 12 points. He scored four goals over a two-game stretch, leading the Broncos to wins over Cal State L.A. (3-2) and UC San Diego (3-2) late in the season. He was one of only two freshmen on the All-CCAA second team. Three freshmen earned first-team honors.

Van der Fluit had a team-high six assists and was second on the team in scoring with 10 points. He had two game-winning goals, one against UC San Diego and the other against San Francisco State.

Cardenas had a pair of goals for the Broncos in his final season with the program, but he missed the last three games because of an injury. He earned second-team honors in 2002 and 2003.

The Broncos finished the 2004 season with a 7-11-1 overall record and a 5-8-1 conference mark. Cal Poly Pomona finished with four wins in its last seven matches.

Broncos End Season With Loss
Cal Poly Pomona falls to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-1

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team was much more competitive this time around, but the end result was the same against California Collegiate Athletic Association power Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Broncos, who lost to the Toros, 9-0, in September in Carson, gave a much more spirited effort on Saturday, but still fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-1, Saturday at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (7-11-1, 5-8-1) concludes its 2004 season, while Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-2-2, 11-0-2) put the finishing touches on another CCAA South Division crown. The Toros will host the CCAA Championship Tournament beginning on Friday.

The Toros took a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris O’Campo just 4:58 into the game, but the Broncos battled the Toros on even terms until Cal State Dominguez Hills finally got its second goal in the 69th minute. Francisco Corona, who assisted on O’Campo’s first goal, made a nice run and eluded Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Gabe Ward (Sr., Chino Hills, Damien HS) before tapping the ball into an empty net.

The Broncos had a golden opportunity to slice the deficit in half, but Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza JC) drilled a penalty kick just wide. A short while later, Corona set up teammate Kei Kamara with a beautiful pass and Kamara knocked a shot into an empty net.

The Broncos got on the board in the 79th minute when Wallace scored his third goal of the season. Vic Perkins (Fr., Palmdale, Highland HS) passed the ball to Andrew Bornstein (Sr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC) to start the scoring play. Bornstein then set up Wallace in the middle of the penalty area and he drilled a shot into the net.

Kyle Polak made one save for the Toros, while Ward and Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) combined for five saves. Cal State Dominguez Hills held an 11-10 advantage in shots.

It was a physical game with the two teams combining for seven yellow cards and 45 fouls.

Broncos See Playoff Hopes End
Cal Poly Pomona falls to Cal State Bakersfield, 3-0

BAKERSFIELD – The impressive run toward a potential CCAA Championship Tournament spot came to an end Thursday night for Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team.

The Broncos, who had posted three straight victories to climb back into contention, had that streak snapped by a surging Cal State Bakersfield team, 3-0, on the Main Soccer Field at Cal State Bakersfield. The Broncos (7-10-1, 5-7-1) controlled action for long stretches of the match Thursday, but could not get a shot past Cal State Bakersfield goalie Josh Wicks.

The Roadrunners scored their first goal in the 25th minute and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. Although the Broncos had some chances at tying the game early in the second half, the Roadrunner defense held strong and Cal State Bakersfield finally put the game away with two goals late in the second half.

Cal State Bakersfield owned a 13-10 edge in shots. Andrew Bornstein (Sr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC) had two of the Broncos’ four shots on goal. Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made three saves for the Broncos.

San Antonio College) and Kory Felix (Sr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS), who will be concluding their Cal Poly Pomona careers.

Broncos Win In Double Overtime
Cal Poly Pomona edges UC San Diego, 3-2

POMONA – It took awhile, but Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team was able to avenge one of its most lopsided losses of the season.

The Broncos got a pair of goals from Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) and the game-winner from Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) and knocked off UC San Diego, 3-2, Monday in La Jolla. Cal Poly Pomona (7-9-1, 5-6-1) has won three straight matches for the first time this season and is now 4-1 in its last five contests.

The Broncos were also able to reverse a disappointing 6-1 loss to the Tritons on Kellogg Field on Sept. 25.

This time, the Broncos held the Tritons to a scoreless draw in the first half and, after falling behind 2-0 in the second half, scored twice in the final 20 minutes to get the game into overtime. Venegas scored both goals in regulation and now has a team-leading six goals this season.

Venegas scored his first goal in the 71st minute, beating the UC San Diego goalie to a loose ball and calmly knocking it into the net. He struck again with just 3:43 left in regulation, scoring off a pass from Kory Felix (Sr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS).

Van der Fluit got his second game-winner when he accepted a brilliant pass from Joe DeVito (Sr., Walnut Creek, De La Salle HS) and drilled in a shot from about 12 yards out.

The Tritons held a 19-15 advantage in shots.

Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made eight saves in goal for the Broncos.

Cal Poly Pomona will be at Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday night before completing the regular season on Saturday at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Broncos Hold Off Cal State L.A.
Venegas scores twice in 3-2 Cal Poly Pomona victory

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team enjoyed its best goal-scoring flurry of the season and made it stand up for a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Broncos scored three goals in a five-minute span of the second half and held off Cal State L.A., 3-2, Saturday night at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (6-9-1, 4-6-1) won its second straight game and avenged a loss to Cal State L.A. earlier this month in Los Angeles.

The Golden Eagles (8-7-1, 6-4-1) missed a chance to pick up some ground in the CCAA South Division. Cal State L.A. trails UC San Diego by one point for third in the division and the final wildcard spot for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) scored a pair of goals in the game and capped quite a day for the Venegas family. Sister Jamie Venegas, a junior on the women’s team, scored one goal in the Broncos’ 2-0 win in that game.

Matthew Barker (So., La Verne, Bonita HS) scored the other goal for the Broncos.

Jairo Salazar and Anthony Ordonez scored for the Golden Eagles.
|
Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made seven saves in goal for the Broncos, while Ricky Gonzalez made six saves for the Golden Eagles. Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed an 18-11 advantage in shots.

Salazar opened the scoring just 4:18 into the game when he drilled a penalty kick into the left-hand corner of the net.

That was the only scoring until the Broncos’ game-deciding flurry of goals, all of which came on headers.

Barker tied the game in the 50th minute when he headed in a cross from Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS).

Venegas then gave the Broncos the lead for good when he headed in a long throw-in by Darren Ross (Jr., Northridge, El Camino Real HS) at the 53:43 mark. Then, just 73 seconds later, he headed in a cross from Van der Fluit, whose two assists gave him a team-leading six assists.

The Golden Eagles made it 3-2 in the 69th minute when Ordonez knocked in a point-blank shot after a flurry in front of the goal.

The Broncos will return to action on Monday with a game at UC San Diego. The game was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but was postponed by rain.

Broncos Beat Gators In Overtime
Van der Fluit’s goal gives Broncos 2-1 victory

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team worked a little overtime on Sunday, but Ben Van der Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) made sure it was worth the extra effort.

Van der Fluit’s first goal of the season 7:13 into overtime lifted the Broncos to a 2-1 win over San Francisco State Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field. The Broncos (5-9-1, 3-6-1) played into overtime for the third time in their past four games and finally had a victory to show for it. Cal Poly Pomona lost an overtime contest to Sonoma State on Friday and tied Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 8.

An onrushing Van der Fluit collected a flick pass from Andrew Pierce (Jr., Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS) and knocked it into the net for the game-winner. Joe DeVito (Sr., Walnut Creek, De La Salle HS) started the play by getting the ball to Pierce.

Pierce had two assists for the Broncos, who have won two of their last three games.

Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a 14-9 advantage in shots.

Matthew Barker (So., La Verne, Bonita HS) scored in the 29th minute to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. Dawit Berhanu (Fr., Ontario, Montclair HS) started the play with a nice run down the left sideline. His cross was then redirected by Pierce to an onrushing Barker, who drilled his shot just inside the left post.

The Gators (5-10-1, 4-5-1) got their lone goal in the 62nd minute when Kenny Brandenburg drilled a shot from about 40 yards out that found its way over Cal Poly Pomona goalie Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) and into an empty Bronco net.

Coombs had two saves in the contest, one coming on a point-blank attempt by San Francisco State’s Miguel Hall in the second half.

The Broncos will return to action on Wednesday in a match at UC San Diego.

Broncos Fall In Overtime
Sonoma State outlasts Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1

POMONA – After scoring late in regulation to force overtime, Cal Poly Pomona men’s soccer team saw the extra effort end in a disappointing defeat.

Sonoma State’s Andrew Bailey stole a clearing attempt by the Broncos and scored into an empty net to lift the Seawolves to a 2-1 overtime victory Friday night at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (4-9-1, 2-6-1) had sent the game into overtime with just 2:02 remaining when Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza College) knocked in his second goal of the season.

Sonoma State (8-5-2, 4-4-1) held a 9-6 advantage in shots. Cal Poly Pomona goalie Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) made two saves for the Broncos, including a point-blank stop on Tim Maycock in the first minute of overtime. Clark Rupp made one save for the Seawolves.

The game was evenly played throughout and most of the action took place in the midfield. Scoring opportunities were limited and the first half ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute when Michael Nathan headed in a cross from Bailey.
Sonoma State preserved its lead and seemed headed for a victory in regulation when the Broncos struck for the equalizing goal. Darren Ross (Jr., Northridge, El Camino Real HS) started the scoring play with a throw-in, which was flicked into the box by Dawit Berhanu (Fr., Ontario, Montclair HS). Wallace took the pass in traffic and sent the ball into the corner of the net.

The Broncos had another golden opportunity in the final minute of regulation, but a dangerous pass rolled across the goalmouth and just past the goal.

Coombs made a sensational play to smother a shot by Maycock in the opening minute of regulation to keep the Broncos in the game. Bailey, though, pounced on a clearing attempt and dribbled in, patiently waiting to knock the ball into an empty net with 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Sunday with a home game against San Francisco State beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Broncos Fall To No. 12 Tritons
UC San Diego denies Broncos of a second-straight win

The Broncos, four days after defeating rival Cal State San Bernardino at home, fell behind early and dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 12 UC San Diego Saturday night at Kellogg Field. The Tritons got three first-half goals from Matthew Davey to take a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Dustin Venegas (Fr., Lakewood, Los Alamitos HS) provided the Broncos with their lone bright spot when he scored his second goal of the season in the final minute of the game to prevent a shutout.

UC San Diego (4-0-2, 3-0-1) held a 17-4 advantage in shots.

Cal Poly Pomona (2-5, 0-2) lost its second straight contest, while Cal State Monterey Bay (1-3-0, 1-0-0) won in its California Collegiate Athletic Association debut.

The Broncos had only a few scoring chances, the best coming in the waning minutes when Dawit Berhanu (Fr., Ontario, Montclair HS) took a point-blank shot with his left foot that Cal State Monterey Bay goalie Bobby Arteaga made a diving stop to keep from going in the net.

The Broncos had a few other good opportunities, but couldn’t convert. Arteaga and starting goalie Jared Racz both made two saves in goal for the Otters.

The Broncos also got a goal and an assist from Andrew Pierce (Jr., Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS) and a goal from Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino, Mt. San Antonio College).

Tim Sisk (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) played the majority of the game in goal for the Broncos. He made a great save in the first half to prevent a Bryant goal and he made several other aggressive plays to thwart potential Bryant rushes.

Joseph Truncali and Michael Garguilo scored the goals for Bryant, which will meet a second California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent in Cal State L.A. this weekend.

Pierce opened the scoring for the Broncos with a strong individual effort, fighting off the Bryant defense and rifling a shot into the net just six minutes into the game.

The Broncos took a 2-0 lead five minutes into the second half when Cardenas knocked in a rebound of a shot by Darren Ross (Jr., Northridge, El Camino Real HS) that bounced off the right goalpost.
After Truncali converted a shot past Cal Poly Pomona backup goalie Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) after a pass from Bryan Gravel, Barker made the play of the game just six minutes later to give the Broncos a two-goal advantage once again.

Barker got control of the ball on the Broncos’ half of the field and began an aggressive run up the field. Eluding several physical Bryant defenders along the way, he finally met up with Bryant goalie Alex Bissias, got past him and shot the ball into the net.

Bryant battled back and closed the gap to 3-2 in the 68th minute when Michael Garguilo scored off an assist from Clint Stonacek.

The Broncos countered in the 80th minute when Barker headed in a pass from Pierce while in a huge crowd in front of the Bryant net.

Cal Poly Pomona will begin a three-game road swing through Washington on Saturday with a game at Western Washington. All three contests will be against NCAA Division II West Region opponents.
