Paul Caligiuri, the former Los Angeles Galaxy star and United States national player and a newly elected U.S. Hall of Famer, begins his third season as the head Cal Poly Pomona soccer coach and looks to build upon his first two seasons.

The Broncos went from 3-15-1 in 2001 to 8-9-1 in 2002 and were one of the most improved teams in the country in Caligiuri's first season as head coach and Cal Poly Pomona was involved in the battle for a CCAA Championship Tournament berth until the final day in his second season in 2003.

Earlier this summer, Caligiuri was elected to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame along with Michelle Akers and Eric Wynalda. The trio will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame in October.

Senior midfielder Robert Cardenas earned All-CCAA honors for a second straight year last season and will lead eight returning starters for the Broncos this season. He was third on the team in scoring in 2003.

Cal Poly Pomona has made one NCAA postseason appearance and that came in 1998 when the Broncos lost in the first round to Grand Canyon, 3-1. The program has had one All-American, Trevor Perrson, who made the third team in the 2000.

Sophomore Andrew Pierce was second on the team with five goals and 12 points, while Cardenas was third with three goals, four assists and 10 points.
