Cal
Poly Pomona's men's basketball program, coming off a
second straight historic season, is looking for yet
another first in the 2004-05 season: an unprecidented
third straight year of postseason competition.
The Broncos return three starters, including a pair
of All-West Region performers, from a team that went
21-7 in 2003-04. The Broncos made their second straight
appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs, which was
a first for the program. Cal Poly Pomona has also recorded
consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in the
program's history. The Broncos were 23-7 in 2002-03
when they captured the NCAA Division II West Region
championship and advanced to the national quarterfinals
for the first time since 1964.
With 10 winning seasons in a row and a program-record
44 victories over the past two seasons, Cal Poly Pomona
has firmly established itself as one of the top men's
basketball programs in the NCAA Division II.
The Broncos will be led by fifth-year head coach Greg
Kamansky, who has guided the Broncos to a 79-33 record
in his first four seasons at Cal Poly Pomona. He directed
the Broncos to marks of 17-10 (2000-01) and 18-9 (2001-02)
in his first two years as the head coach and then guided
the Broncos to their historic seasons the past two years.
His winning percentage of .705 is the best among all
Bronco men's basketball head coaches.
The Broncos have a lot of talent returning, including
two-time All-CCAA first-team selection Jeff Bonds, who
was the West Regional Most Valuable Player in 2002-03
when he led the Broncos to the regional title and David
Sybesma, another two-time All-CCAA pick. Bonds was also
a first-team All-West Region pick in 2003-04, while
Sybesma earned second-team All-Region honors.
Cal Poly Pomona will open its 2004-05 season with a
home game against Vanguard University before heading
to Western Washington for the Chuck Randall Thanksgiving
Classic. The Broncos will open conference play at home
against Sonoma State on Dec. 3. The popular Pack The
Gym Night will be Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 against five-time
defending CCAA champion Cal State San Bernardino, who
the Broncos beat in double overtime to win the 2003
West Region title.
