Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team, which was one of the most improved squads in the nation last year, looks to build upon its bounce-back 2004 season and make a run for a postseason berth in 2005.

The Broncos, after an uncharacteristic 15-39 record in 2003, improved by 11 victories in 2004 and recorded a 26-25-2 mark. The Broncos also jumped from a 10-29 California Collegiate Athletic Association mark in 2003 to a 19-20-1 record in 2004 that found the Broncos in the thick of the race for the CCAA Championship Tournament until the final weekend.

Cal Poly Pomona, which won NCAA Division II championships in 1976, 1980 and 1983 under legendary coach John Scolinos, has now posted winning records in five of the past six years and won 30 or more games three times in the past five seasons.

Mike Ashman, who was a key member of the Broncos’ 1980 championship squad, enters his 10th season as the Cal Poly Pomona head coach. Ashman has guided the Broncos to a 220-253-5 overall record in his first nine seasons.

Cal Poly Pomona has some key personnel returning in 2005, including several of its top position players. Outfielder Matt Stevens returns for his senior year with the Broncos after hitting .318 last season. Stevens has hit better than .300 in each of his first three seasons with Cal Poly Pomona. Middle infielder Matt Lopez, also a senior, returns for his final year after a breakthrough 2004 campaign. Lopez was third on the team in hitting with a career-best .345 average. Jarrod Allen, who led the Broncos in home runs last season with eight, sophomore infielder Kevin Falls, who started 37 games as a freshman and junior catcher Anthony Esquer, who started 34 games last year, are also key returning players.

The Broncos also return two key starting pitchers in what is largely a revamped staff. Junior Luis Carreras, who went 4-2 last season for the Broncos, and junior Taylor Wilding, who was third on the team in innings pitched, will be the only veterans in the starting rotation.

Cal Poly Pomona is expected to benefit from a talented group of newcomers, several of whom are expected to make major contributions. Junior infielder Jake Mendrin, junior infielder Kenny Lane, junior outfielder Chris Janowicz, junior pitcher Matt Lusk, junior pitcher John Cross, junior pitcher Mike Quintal and junior pitcher Bryan Jackson are among the top new players for the Broncos.
