BRONCOS POST
VICTORIES OVER SEATTLE, GRAND CANYON: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team
stretched its current winning streak to three games with a pair of victories
last week over NCAA Division II West Region opponents. The Broncos opened the
week with a 72-53 win over Seattle University
on Tuesday in Kellogg Gym. Jeff Bonds
(Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) led three Broncos in double
figures with 22 points, while also gathering in a team-high nine rebounds. David Sybesma
(Sr., Corona, Corona
Centennial HS) had 17 points, two rebounds and four assists, while Dion Cook (So., Canoga
Park, Chaminade
HS) had 11 points and three assists. The Broncos shot 55 percent for the game
and were a sizzling 10 of 16 from behind the 3-point arc. The Broncos also made
18 of their 22 free-throw tries and forced 14 turnovers. Cal Poly Pomona shot
67 percent from the field in the first half while building a 43-24 halftime lead.
Seattle opened the second half with a 9-1 run and sliced the margin to 11
points, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Billy
Hofman (So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS) boosted
the lead back to 17 points and the Broncos led comfortably the rest of the way.
Hofman finished with nine points and six rebounds.
The Broncos returned to action on Saturday and overcame a slow start to win at Grand
Canyon, 59-46. Cal Poly Pomona trailed early, 12-2, and found
itself down at halftime, 26-18. The Broncos, though, outscored the Antelopes,
41-20, in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona trailed, 37-33, with 9:35 remaining, but went on a game-breaking
18-0 run to take control. Jonathan Boyd
(Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda
HS) started the run with a 3-pointer and the Broncos really gathered momentum
after back-to-back 3-pointers by Hofman and Boyd and
a three-point play by Sybesma. Boyd had 10 points
during the stretch. Boyd and Bonds both had 15 points to lead the Broncos,
while Hofman added 12 points and three assists. After
shooting just 31 percent in the first half, the Broncos shot a more respectable
42 percent in the second half, including an impressive 6-of-11 performance from
behind the 3-point arc.
