VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS FINISH SEASON WITH LOSS IN PLAYOFFS

2004 Overall Record: 18-12. 2004 CCAA Record: 12-6 (Tied for 3rd)

BRONCOS FALL TO REGIONAL CHAMPIONS IN FIRST ROUND: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time since 1997, but the postseason stay was a short one. The Broncos lost a first-round match to No. 2 seed and eventual regional champion Cal State San Bernardino, 30-20, 30-28, 30-23 Thursday at UC San Diego. Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Antoinette Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS) had 10 kills and three blocks and Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had 10 kills and one block. The Broncos’ best chance at extending the match came in the second game. Cal Poly Pomona held a 17-14 lead until Cal State San Bernardino went on a huge run to make it 28-22. Cal Poly Pomona, led by some outstanding play at the net by Kathol, scored the next five points to make it 28-27. The Broncos also trailed by just one point at 29-28, but could not get the tying tally. The Broncos trailed by just two points in the third game, 22-20, before Cal State San Bernardino made a final surge to end the match. Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) had 25 assists, two service aces and two blocks. The match ended the Cal Poly Pomona careers of Jen Bullock (Sr., Anaheim, Eastern New Mexico) and Megan Meenan (Sr., Hermosa Beach, El Camino College).

BRONCOS PLACE THREE ON ALL-CCAA TEAMS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team placed three players on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association teams announced last week by the conference. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) was named to the All-CCAA first team, while Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) and Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley, Riverside CC) both earned second-team recognition. Anderson made the first team for the first time in her Cal Poly Pomona career. She earned second-team honors in 2003 even though she went on to get first-team All-Pacific Region and honorable mention All-America recognition. She was second on the team with 405 kills and tied for first in blocks with 105. She also led the team in hitting percentage with a .306 mark. Francis, earning her first All-CCAA recognition, led the team with 439 kills. She was also second in digs with 239. Gordon, playing her first season with the Broncos, was third on the team with 240 kills. She also had 45 blocks. Cal Poly Pomona went 18-12 overall and 12-6 in the CCAA. The Broncos finished in a tie for third in the conference, which is their best finish in the CCAA since the conference expanded in 1998.

The Broncos opened the season with a 97-89 win over Azusa Pacific on Friday at the Felix Event Center. Cal Poly Pomona shot nearly 49 percent from the floor and was a sizzling 9-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc.
