POSTSEASON FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1997: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball
team posted wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Grand Canyon
last week to conclude a successful regular season and then received the news
they had been waiting for on Sunday. The Broncos were selected to the NCAA
Division II playoffs for the first time since 1997. Cal Poly Pomona is the No.
7 seed and will face defending regional champion Cal State San Bernardino, the
No. 2 seed, on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
at UC San Diego. The Broncos ended their regular season with home victories
over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Grand Canyon. Cal
Poly Pomona beat the Toros, 30-23, 24-30, 30-26,
30-21 on Wednesday to complete its California Collegiate Athletic Association
schedule with a 12-6 record. The Broncos finished conference play in a tie for
third, which is their highest finish since the CCAA expanded in 1998. Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino,
Don Lugo HS) led a balanced Cal Poly Pomona attack
with 16 kills and nine digs. Antoinette Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS) added 13 kills
and five blocks, Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora, Citrus College) had 12 kills
and four blocks and Allison Anderson
(Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had 11 kills and five blocks. Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) had 51 assists and also contributed five
kills in five attacks. Kiting Kolar (Fr., La Canada,
La Canada HS) had a team-high 15 digs, while Breezie Jordan (Jr., Ventura,
Buena HS) had 13 digs. The Broncos then honored seniors Megan Meenan (Sr., Hermosa
Beach, El Camino College) and
Jen Bullock (Sr., Anaheim,
Eastern New Mexico) before Friday’s regular-season
ending match against Grand Canyon. The Broncos knocked
off the Antelopes, former CCAA members, 30-21, 30-21, 24-30, 30-21. Anderson
had a strong match with 20 kills and five blocks. Francis had 19 kills and 12
digs, while Kathol had 11 kills and four blocks. Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno
Valley, Riverside
CC) had seven kills and three blocks. Bullock had 33 assists, while Bullock had
24 assists. Kolar had a team-high 13 digs and two
aces, while Defoort had five kills and five blocks.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFF
MATCH TO BE WEBCAST: Cal Poly Pomona’s return to the NCAA Division II
playoffs will be able to be heard on the Bronco athletic website. The Broncos
will face Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and the game can be heard live. If the Broncos
win, the next match will be on Friday at 5 p.m.
Webcasts will be done for the duration of the
Broncos’ stay in the playoffs. This is Cal Poly Pomona’s first appearance in
the NCAA playoffs since 1997.

MEN SET FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
CAL POLY POMONA MOVES
UP TO 13TH IN THE NATION: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s cross country
team will be participating in the NCAA Division II Championships this Saturday
in Evansville, Ind. The Broncos, after finishing second in the West Region
championships at Western Washington, jumped to 13th
in the country in the latest national poll. Last year, the Broncos finished 11th
in the nation, led by an All-American performance from Mark Batres (Jr., Rowland
Heights, Don Bosco Tech HS), who finished
24th. The Broncos’ powerful 1-2 punch of Batres
and Daniel Rojas (Sr., El
Monte, Mt. San Antonio
College) figure to challenge for individual honors once again. Batres won the regional championship with Rojas finishing
second, while Rojas won the California Collegiate Athletic Association
championship with Batres finishing second. The
Broncos also got outstanding efforts at the regional championships from James Tawney
(Jr., Barstow, Barstow
HS), David Cerecerez
(Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Mt. San Antonio College), Christopher Miano
(Jr., Barstow, Mt. San Antonio
College), Brad Theobald
(Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS)
and Peter Barriga
(Jr., Huntington Beach, Edison HS).
MEN’S BASKETBALL:
BRONCOS PICK UP EXHIBITION WIN OVER DIVISION I TEAM

BONDS LEADS BRONCOS PAST UNIVERSITY OF SAN
DIEGO: Cal Poly Pomona’s Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS)
poured in 28 points and David Sybesma (Jr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) added 16 points to lead Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s
basketball team to a 73-66 exhibition victory over the University
of San Diego last Thursday in San
Diego. Bonds, a Street & Smith’s preseason
All-American, hit 10 of his 14 field-goal attempts and also added eight
rebounds and five assists. The Broncos led, 34-32, at halftime and then shot a
sizzling 59.3 percent in the second half. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg,
Pittsburg HS) had 11 points for the Broncos, while Dion Cook (So., Canoga
Park, Chaminade
HS) and Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) had seven points each.
BRONCOS TO OPEN
SEASON WITH HOME CONTEST: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team, ranked
22nd in the nation in the Division II Bulletin’s preseason poll,
will open its 2004-05 season with a home game against Vanguard University next
Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The Broncos will also play in a tournament at Western
Washington on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27, before opening
conference play with a game against Sonoma
State in Kellogg Gym on Friday,
Dec. 3.

BRONCOS TO FACE
COUGARS, THEN HOST ST. THOMAS ON SATURDAY: Cal Poly Pomona’s
women’s basketball team, which is ranked 25th in the nation in the
Division II Coaches’ Preseason Poll, will open the 2004-05 season with a game
at Azusa Pacific on Friday. The Broncos will then host St.
Thomas University
on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Kellogg Gym.
Cal Poly Pomona has three starters returning from its 2003-04
team that advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional championship game.
The Broncos have reached the regional championship game in four of the last
five years, which is more than any other Division II program. Included in that
run are national championships in 2001 and 2002. Cal Poly Pomona welcomes back Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University
of Arizona), who was the CCAA Player of the Year and led the NCAA Division II
in scoring last year with a 24.5 point per game average. Brandi Fletcher (Jr., Pomona,
Diamond Ranch HS) and Shanika Perkins (Jr., Oakland,
Oakland HS) are other starters back from last year’s team.
