VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS LOSE
TWICE TO CONFERENCE LEADERS
2004 Overall Record:
16-11. 2004 CCAA Record: 11-6
BRONCOS BATTLE, BUT
FALL TO TRITONS AND COYOTES Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team endured
the toughest trip of the season in California Collegiate Athletic Association
play and dropped matches to UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino. The
Broncos are currently in third place in the conference and can clinch no worse
than a tie for third with a win Wednesday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal
Poly Pomona opened the weekend with a 30-22, 30-26, 30-27 loss to No. 2 UC San
Diego on Friday. Allison Anderson
(Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) led the Broncos with 10
kills, while Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino,
Don Lugo HS) had eight kills and eight digs. Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno
Valley, Riverside
CC) had seven kills and three blocks. Emily
Kennedy (Jr., Upland, Upland
HS) had 32 assists and two aces, while Antoinette
Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS) had six
kills and two blocks. The Broncos had a golden opportunity to extend the match,
but UC San Diego took key points in the final two games. Cal Poly Pomona jumped
out to a 14-8 lead in Game Two and was still tied at 20-20. The Tritons went on
a 6-2 run to take a 26-22 advantage and put away the frame. In Game Three, the
teams were tied at 26-26 before the Tritons scored three straight points and
ultimately won the match on a Cal Poly Pomona serving error. On Saturday, the
Broncos started slowly against Cal State San Bernardino and fell, 30-17, 30-19,
30-32, 30-22. Francis had a team-high 18 kills and 14 digs, while Anderson
had 11 kills and one block. Kiting Kolar (Fr., La Canada,
La Canada HS) had a match-high 21 digs. Jen
Bullock (Sr., Anaheim, Eastern New Mexico) had 31 assists and nine
digs, while Kennedy added 17 assists and one ace. Casey Riedel (So., Saugus,
Saugus HS) and Kathol had
three aces each. After losing the first two games, the Broncos jumped out to an
11-2 advantage in the third game. An ace by Riedel gave the Broncos a 29-25
edge, but the Coyotes scored five straight points to get to match point at
30-29. A kill by Francis knotted the game up, Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora,
Citrus College)
and Kathol recorded a block to make it 31-30 and Defoort finished the game with a kill. The fourth game was
also very competitive with the Coyotes never leading by more than four points
until a late run gave them a 26-20 edge.
BRONCOS TO FINISH
REGULAR SEASON WITH HOME MATCHES: The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball
team will look to continue its drive toward a possible NCAA Division II playoff
berth when the Broncos conclude the 2004 regular season with home matches this
week. The Broncos will host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday in their
California Collegiate Athletic Association finale and then entertain former
conference foe Grand Canyon on Friday. The Broncos are
currently third in the conference and can clinch no worse than a tie for third
with a victory Wednesday.
BRONCOS WILL LEARN
PLAYOFF FATE ON
SUNDAY: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team, bidding for its first
NCAA Division II playoff appearance since 1997, will find out on Sunday whether
it is one of the top eight teams in the Pacific Region. Cal Poly Pomona was
ranked eighth in the most recent poll released last Wednesday, which came
before weekend losses to UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino. The ranking
certainly seemed to be low, especially considering the Broncos own season
sweeps over No. 5 Cal State L.A. and No. 7 Cal State Bakersfield and are ahead
of both teams in the CCAA standings.

team, while Ben Van der
Fluit (Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS) and Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino Hills, Mt.
San Antonio College) received honorable mention in voting done by the
conference coaches. Venegas led the Broncos with six
goals and 12 points. He was one of only two freshmen in the conference named to
the second team. Three freshmen earned first-team honors. Van der Fluit led the Broncos with
six assists also had a pair of game-winning goals. He finished second on the
team in scoring with 10 points. Cardenas
earned conference recognition for a third straight year. He earned second-team
honors in 2002 and 2003.

BRONCOS
FALL TO CHICO STATE IN OPENING MATCH: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team made its
record seventh straight appearance in the California Collegiate Athletic
Association Championship Tournament, but the stint was a short one. The Broncos
were blanked by Chico State,
2-0, Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills in a conference semi-final match. Cal
Poly Pomona had a six-match unbeaten streak snapped with the loss. The Broncos
held a 17-12 advantage in shots, including a 13-3 edge in the second half. Jacqueline Ragudos
(Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS), Lisa
Araujo (Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) and Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta
Loma HS) all had outstanding scoring chances that were thwarted by the Chico
State goalkeeper and some alert defenders. Vanessa
Richardson (Jr., Upland, Upland HS) had a pair of saves for the Broncos. Chico
State got its first goal in the 22nd
minute and then made it 2-0 with a goal 16 minutes later.
BRONCOS GET SEVEN NAMED TO
ALL-CCAA TEAMS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team had seven players
named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association teams announced
last week by the conference. Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego, U. of San Diego HS) was named

honor since Lisa Araujo
(Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) won it in 2001. She shared the team lead in goals
scored with six goals and had 14 total points. Araujo
and Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San
Diego, Bonita Vista HS) earned
first-team honors in voting done by the conference coaches. It was the third
straight year Araujo was named to the all-conference
first team. She led the Broncos in scoring with six goals and 16 total points.
