BRONCOS
ENJOY SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND TRIP: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team showed
some spark on the road last weekend and came away with a tie and a win in two
contests with California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division squads.
The Broncos started the week with a 2-2 tie against Cal State Stanislaus on
Friday. The Broncos opened the scoring quickly, getting on the board just 5:58 into the contest. Dawit Berhanu (Fr., Ontario,
Montclair HS) got his first goal of the season when he headed in a corner kick
from Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino
Hills, Mt. San Antonio College). The Broncos made it 2-0 in the 23rd
minute when Brandon Moses (Sr.,
Mission Viejo, Chico State) scored off a corner kick from Ben Van der Fluit
(Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS). It was Van der Fluit’s team-leading fourth assist of the season. The
Warriors rebounded from the 2-0 deficit and tied the game with a pair of
second-half goals, including the game-tying score, which came on a penalty
kick. The Broncos owned a 16-9 edge in shots. Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm
Springs, Palm Springs HS)
made two saves for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona then put together one of its most
solid performances of the season on Sunday when the Broncos blanked Chico
State, 2-0. The Broncos, for the
second straight game, jumped out to a quick lead. Peter Wallace (Sr., San Martin, De Anza JC) took a cross from Matthew Barker (Fr., La
Verne, Bonita HS) and knocked in a shot just 10:18 into the match. Cal Poly Pomona held the
1-0 advantage until the 70th minute when Cardenas
scored his second goal of the season with an assist from Joe DeVito (Sr., Walnut
Creek, De La Salle HS).
Coombs recorded four saves and posted his first career shutout. The Broncos
owned a 13-9 edge in shots.
BRONCOS TO HOST TWO MATCHES THIS WEEKEND: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s
soccer team will play its next two matches at home. The Broncos will host Sonoma
State on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and then entertain San
Francisco State on
Sunday, Oct. 17, at 12:30 p.m. Cal
Poly Pomona has six matches remaining this season and four of them will be
played at Kellogg Field.
WOMEN'S
SOCCER: BRONCOS SPLIT TOUGH PAIR OF ROAD CONTESTS
2004
Overall Record: 5-6-2. 2004 CCAA Record: 4-2-2
BRONCOS
BLANK WARRIORS, FALL TO WILDCATS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team earned
a split on its tough road trip against two of the top teams in the California
Collegiate Athletic Association North Division. The Broncos opened the weekend
impressively, posting a 3-0 victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Friday. The
Warriors entered the game with seven shutouts and had allowed only five goals
all season. Erica Rodriguez (Jr., San
Diego, Bonita Vista HS)
scored a pair of goals to lead the Bronco offensive assault. Rodriguez scored
her first goal with an assist from Lindsey
Latham (Fr., San Diego, Our
Lady of Peace HS). The goal came 20 minutes into the contest. Mary Real (Jr., Upland,
Mt. San Antonio College) made it 2-0 late in the first
half with a breakaway goal in the 44th minute. Rodriguez completed
the scoring with her second goal of the game in the 80th minute. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) made three saves and posted her third
shutout of the season. The Broncos blanked an opponent for the third straight
game, tying Cal State Bakersfield and then beating Cal State L.A. and Cal State
Stanislaus. Cal Poly Pomona finally allowed a goal, to Chico
State on Sunday, and that’s all the
Wildcats needed to post a 1-0 victory over the Broncos. The match was a
defensive battle with Chico State
scoring the game’s only goal in the 42nd minute. Chico
State held a slim 7-6 advantage in
shots. The Wildcats had only two shots on goal during the contest, while the
Broncos had only one – by Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego,
Univ. of San Diego HS).
Richardson made one save for the
Broncos.
BRONCOS RETURN HOME FOR TWO KEY
MATCHES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will continue California
Collegiate Athletic Association play this week with a pair of home games. The
Broncos are bidding to remain the only team to reach every California
Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament and are in a tight
battle for a wildcard spot this season. The Broncos will host Sonoma
State, another team in the fight
for a tournament spot, on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
and then entertain San Francisco State on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Broncos have six
matches remaining in the season and four of them will be played at Kellogg
Field.
CROSS COUNTRY: WOMEN
CONTINUE THEIR UPWARD CLIMB
CAL POLY POMONA TEAMS
ARE RANKED HIGH IN THE REGION: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s cross
country teams are off until hosting the California Collegiate Athletic
Association championships at Prado Park on Oct. 23 and
both teams figure to carry high regional rankings into the competition. The
Bronco men are ranked third in the West Region behind the dynamic 1-2 punch of Daniel Rojas (Sr., El
Monte, Mt. San Antonio
College) and Mark Batres
(Jr., Rowland Heights, Don Bosco
Tech HS). Rojas has won his last two races, beating talented fields at the Southern
Indiana and UC Riverside Invitationals. Batres was second in Southern Indiana
and did not run in Riverside. The
women, meanwhile, have moved up to third in the West Region, which is their
highest regional ranking ever. The Broncos started the season unranked, moved
to fourth after the invitational in Southern Indiana and
climbed to third after the meet in Riverside.
Natalie Miano-Batres
(Jr., Hacienda Heights, Nogales
HS) has been the No. 1 runner for three of the four meets, while returning
All-CCAA runner Christina Jimenez
(So., Apple Valley, Granite Hills
HS) was the team’s No. 1 runner in Riverside.
The Broncos are also getting solid performances from Karina Vega (Fr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS), Monica Valdez (Jr., Lake Elsinore, Temescal
Canyon HS), Shawna Winfrey (Sr., Santee,
West Hills HS) and Jamie Ray (Jr., Barstow,
Barstow HS). The top three teams from the region in both men’s and women’s
divisions will qualify for the national championships. The men qualified last
year and wound up 11th in the nation, while the women are looking
for only their second-ever trip and first since 1985.
