VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS REMAIN
UNBEATEN IN CONFERENCE PLAY
2004 Overall Record:
9-5. 2004 CCAA Record: 4-0
BRONCOS SWEEP THROUGH
A BUSY WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team remained unbeaten in
California Collegiate Athletic Association play and also posted an impressive
victory over the No. 2-ranked women’s volleyball team in the country last week.
The Broncos are 4-0 in the CCAA and all four wins have come on the road. The
Broncos have a one-half game lead over UC San Diego and are one of only two
teams left undefeated in conference play. Cal Poly Pomona opened the week with
a 30-19, 30-23, 30-27 victory over La Verne
on Tuesday in Darlene May Gym. The Leopards entered the match with an
undefeated record and a No. 2 ranking in the NCAA Division III. The Broncos,
though, were too much on Tuesday and rolled to the win. Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo HS) led the Broncos with 14
kills, while Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora, Citrus College) added nine
kills and Allison Anderson (Jr.,
Chino Hills, Ayala HS) and Mallory Manzo (Fr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had seven kills each.
Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) had 26 assists, while Jen Bullock (Sr., Anaheim,
Eastern New Mexico) had 11 assists in the one game she
played. Kiting Kolar
(Fr., La Canada,
La Canada HS) had a team-high four aces and 10 digs. Kolar
also had a long serving run to close out the match. The Broncos trailed, 27-23,
in the third when Kolar served the final seven points
of the match. She had three aces in that run. Cal Poly Pomona then returned to
CCAA action with a 30-22, 30-21, 30-23 win over Chico
State on Friday in Chico.
Francis had 14 kills to lead the way, while Anderson
had 13 in just 25 swings and Christina
Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley,
Riverside CC) had 11. Kennedy had 34 assists. The
Broncos had 12 aces in the match, including five from Kolar.
Defoort had three aces and Casey Riedel (So., Saugus,
Saugus HS) and Kennedy had two each. The Broncos then
ran their current winning streak to five with a 30-17, 30-14, 30-23 win at Cal
State Stanislaus on Saturday. Francis had 17 kills in the quick match to lead
the Broncos. Gordon had eight kills in just 10 attacks, while Anderson
added seven. Kennedy had 23 assists and three aces, while Kolar
led the team with 10 digs.
ANDERSON NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) was named the Molten California Collegiate
Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of
Sept. 6-12. Anderson had 29 kills
to lead the Broncos to road wins at Cal State L.A. and Cal State Bakersfield.
Anderson, who earned honorable mention All-America honors last season, had 13
kills, six blocks, four digs, two assists and a service ace in the win over Cal
State L.A. and 16 kills on a .361 hitting percentage against Cal State
Bakersfield to go along with seven blocks, four digs and two aces. With the
score tied at 12-12 in the fifth game, Anderson
produced three kills to give the Broncos a 15-13 win
in the deciding game. It’s the first CCAA weekly honor of Anderson’s
Cal Poly Pomona career.
BRONCOS PLAY FIRST
TWO HOME CONFERENCE MATCHES THIS WEEK: The first-place
Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team will play its first two California
Collegiate Athletic Association home matches this weekend in Darlene May Gym.
The Broncos will host Sonoma State
on Friday at 7 p.m. and then face
CCAA newcomer Cal State
Monterey Bay
on Saturday. The Broncos are 4-0 in conference play and hold a one-half game
lead over UC San Diego. The Broncos will also have home matches the following
weekend against Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
MEN'S SOCCER: BRONCOS
GET OFF TO TOUGH CCAA START
2004
Overall Record: 2-5. 2004 CCAA
Record: 0-2.
BRONCOS
DROP FIRST TWO CONFERENCE MATCHES: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team got
its 2004 conference schedule off to a rough start with a pair of shutout
losses. The Broncos opened conference play on Tuesday with a 9-0 loss at Cal
State Dominguez Hills. Cal Poly Pomona fell behind, 5-0, in the first 25
minutes of the game and never recovered. The Broncos were outshot,
28-12. Cal Poly Pomona played a much stronger defensive game on Friday, but the
offense continued to struggle in a 1-0 loss to CCAA newcomer Cal
State Monterey Bay.
The Broncos managed only six shots – the Otters had only three – and two Cal
State Monterey Bay
goalies combined for a shutout. After scoring four goals in the season opener
against Bryant University,
the Broncos have collected only three goals in the past six matches. The
Broncos had a golden opportunity to tie the game late in the match against Cal
State Monterey Bay, but the Otter goalie made a diving save to stop a strong
left-footed shot by Dawit Berhanu
(Fr., Ontario, Montclair HS) from point-blank range. Tim Sisk (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar
HS) played in goal for the Broncos.
BRONCOS
HAVE TWO KEY HOME MATCHES THIS WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team
will continue California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a pair of
home games this week. The Broncos will host Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday
at 7 p.m. and then entertain UC San Diego on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Both squads
reached the CCAA Championship Tournament last season.
WOMEN'S
SOCCER: BRONCOS GET OFF TO STRONG START IN CCAA
2004
Overall Record: 3-4. 2004 CCAA

BRONCOS
POST PAIR OF WINS TO BEGIN CONFERENCE PLAY: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s
soccer team started the season with four straight losses, but the Broncos got
things turned around in a big way. The Broncos opened California Collegiate
Athletic Association play last week and posted a pair of victories. Cal Poly
Pomona got two goals from Lisa Araujo (Sr., Rialto,
Eisenhower HS) and recorded a 2-1 victory over
long-time rival Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday in Carson
to start the week. The Broncos spotted the Toros a
1-0 lead in the first 6:24 of the
game, but then blanked Cal State Dominguez Hills the rest of the way. Araujo tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 13th
minute with an assist from Tia Rudolph (Sr.,
Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma
HS). Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) then preserved the tie late in the first
half with a pair of remarkable saves, the first to stop a penalty kick and the
second to deny a strong bid on the rebound. The Broncos were awarded a penalty
kick in the 66th minute and Araujo didn’t
miss. Her third goal of the season gave Cal Poly Pomona the lead and the
Broncos never relinquished it. Richardson
had six saves for the Broncos. The shots were even, 15-15. The Broncos returned
home and exploded for a 6-0 win over CCAA newcomer Cal
State Monterey Bay
at Kellogg Field on Friday night. Araujo got the
Broncos off to a strong start with a goal in the 13th minute,
putting in the rebound of her own initial shot that had bounced off the
crossbar. Stephanie Mrazik
(Fr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS) made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute when
she headed in a corner kick from Chelsea
Hipley (Jr., Sacramento,
Woodcreek HS). It was Mrazik’s
first goal at Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos took a 3-0 lead before halftime on a
Cal State
Monterey Bay
own goal. The second half continued much like the first. The Broncos extended
their lead to 4-0 when Karen Nembhard (Fr., Pasadena,
Pasadena HS) got the first goal of her Cal Poly Pomona career. Mary Real (Jr., Upland,
Mt. San Antonio College) and Jacqueline Ragudos (Fr., San Diego,
University of San
Diego HS) had assists on the goal. Ragudos made it 5-0 with her first Cal Poly Pomona goal,
dribbling around three defenders in the box and rifling a shot into the left
corner of the goal. Kimberly Stillman (Fr., Arcadia,
Arcadia HS) wrapped up the scoring in the 77th minute when she
headed in a cross by Jamie Venegas (Jr., Lakewood,
Los Alamitos HS). Richardson and Kimberly Weiss (Fr., Fresno,
San Joaquin Memorial HS) combined for the shutout, which was the first of the
year for the Broncos.
BRONCOS TO CONTINUE CCAA PLAY WITH
HOME MATCHES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will continue its California
Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with a pair of home matches this week
against divisional rivals. The Broncos will host Cal State San Bernardino on
Tuesday at Kellogg Field at 4:30 p.m. and then entertain UC San Diego on
Saturday at 7 p.m. The Broncos are in a stretch of four straight home games
that will conclude next Wednesday, Sept. 29, against Cal State Bakersfield.
