CONFERENCE PLAY WITH A BANG
2004 Overall Record:
6-5. 2004 CCAA Record: 2-0
BRONCOS WIN TWO BIG
MATCHES ON THE ROAD: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team opened
California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a monumental sweep of
perennial powers Cal State L.A. and Cal State Bakersfield last week on the
road. The Broncos beat Cal State L.A. in the Eagles’ Nest on Friday night,
26-30, 33-31, 30-26, 30-21 and then beat Cal State
Bakersfield in Bakersfield for the
first time since 1986 on Saturday, 30-19, 26-30, 30-28, 16-30, 15-13. Cal Poly
Pomona won road matches at Cal State L.A. and Cal State Bakersfield in the same
year for the first time since 1984. The Broncos started the week with a four-game
win over the Golden Eagles, 26-30, 33-31, 30-26, 30-21.
Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno Valley,
Riverside CC) had a season-high 22 kills, while Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino,
Don Lugo HS) added 16 kills and four blocks. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala
HS) had 13 kills and six blocks. Megan Meenan (Sr., Hermosa Beach,
El Camino College) had a team-high five aces. The
Broncos dropped the opening game and had to stave off two game points in the
second game. Both game points were saved by kills from Francis and another
Francis kill gave the Broncos a 32-31 edge. Mallory Manzo (Fr., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) then delivered a kill to give Cal Poly Pomona the all-important
second game, 33-31. The Broncos trailed in the third game, 25-21, but went on a
9-1 run to end the frame and then jumped out to a 21-10 advantage in the fourth
game. Cal State L.A. closed the deficit to 26-20, but couldn’t get any closer.
A service ace by Kiting Kolar (Fr., La Canada,
La Canada HS) ended the match. The Broncos then returned to action on Saturday
against a rested Cal State Bakersfield team and prevailed in a stirring
five-game match. The Broncos once again showed the ability to rally, coming
back from a 22-14 deficit to win the third game and then rebounding from a 10-6
deficit in the fifth game. Anderson
led the Broncos with 16 kills and seven blocks, including Cal Poly Pomona’s
final three points of the match. Gordon had 14 kills for the Broncos, including
seven in the opening game. Emily Kennedy
(Jr., Upland, Upland
HS) had 53 assists and five blocks, while Kolar had a
team-high 18 digs. Trailing 10-6, the Broncos took a timeout and then got the
rally started with a kill by Elizabeth Defoort (Jr., Glendora,
Citrus College).
Two kills by Gordon, one by Kennedy and an attack error on the Roadrunners evened
the game at 12-12. That’s when Anderson
took over. Consecutive kills by the Bronco All-American gave Cal Poly Pomona
two match points at 14-12. Cal State Bakersfield saved one of them to make it
14-13, but a kill by Anderson ended
the match.

BRONCOS
SNAP THREE-GAME LOSING STREAK WITH HOME VICTORY: The Cal Poly Pomona men's
soccer team made its return to Kellogg Field a successful one, blanking
Concordia-Irvine, 1-0, last Friday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
The Broncos are now 2-0 at home this season and 0-3 on the road. Playing at
Kellogg Field for the first time since Aug. 26, the Broncos found themselves
locked in a scoreless battle well into the second half. Sean Cima (Fr., Los Alamitos,
Los Alamitos HS) broke the tie with a goal in the 61st
minute. Cima controlled a Cal Poly Pomona corner kick
and, from the left side of the box, rifled a shot into the right corner of the
goal. Gabriel Ward (Sr., Chino
Hills, Damien HS) and Jeff Coombs (Jr., Palm Springs,
Palm Springs HS) each played one half in goal for the Broncos. Coombs made
three saves in the second half and earned the decision for the Broncos.

BRONCOS
NOTCH TWO SECOND-HALF GOALS TO BEAT CONCORDIA: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s
soccer team snapped its season-opening four-game losing streak with a
come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Concordia of Irvine on Friday at Kellogg
Field. The Broncos got second-half goals from Tia Rudolph (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) and Lisa
Araujo (Sr., Rialto,
Eisenhower HS) to get the win. The Broncos started slowly and trailed, 1-0, at
halftime. Concordia held an 8-1 edge in shots in the first half. It was a
different story in the second half, though, as Cal Poly Pomona got untracked.
Rudolph tied the game in the 57th minute, taking a perfect cross
from Sara Flowers (Fr., Santee,
Santana HS) and knocking in a shot from point-blank range. Rudolph then set up
the game-winner, passing to a breaking Araujo, who
faked out the onrushing goalie and kicked the ball into an empty net. The
game-winner came in the 81st minute. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) had a strong game in goal and made six
saves. Cal Poly Pomona opened the week with a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss
at Azusa Pacific, which is the No. 2-ranked NAIA team in the country. Richardson
had an outstanding game in goal for the Broncos, matching her career high with
10 saves. The Cougars, though, scored 3:47
into overtime to pick up the victory. The loss was the Broncos’ fourth in a
row, three of them coming by just one goal and two of them coming in overtime.
BRONCOS TO OPEN CCAA COMPETITION
AT CS DOMINGUEZ HILLS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will open
California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Tuesday when the Broncos
travel to Carson to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona
will then play its first of four consecutive home matches against new CCAA
member Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:30 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY:
BATRES, MIANO-BATRES HONORED BY CONFERENCE
CAL POLY POMONA’S
HUSBAND, WIFE SWEEP WEEKLY AWARDS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s
cross country teams wasted little time
earning California Collegiate Athletic Association honors. Mark Batres (Jr., Rowland
Heights, Don Bosco
Tech HS) and his wife, Natalie Miano-Batres (Jr., Rowland Heights,
Nogales HS) kept the awards in the same household as they won the honors for
the week of Aug. 30 – Sept. 5. Batres received his
honor after finishing second at the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener. He
completed the 8,000-meter course at the Carbon
Canyon Regional Park
in Brea in 24:39.5. The Broncos
were second in the race and beat Division I programs UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton,
Pepperdine and San Diego.
It was the third weekly honor of Batres’ career. Miano-Batres was honored after finishing 18th
out of 183 competitors at the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener. Her time over
a 5,000-meter course at Carbon Canyon
Regional Park
was 18:55.2. The Broncos finished seventh as a team out of 13 four-year
schools. Miano-Batres is the first member of the
Broncos’ women’s program to receive conference weekly honors since Monica Valdez (Jr., Lake
Elsinore,
Temescal Canyon HS) won for the week of Oct. 1-7, 2001.
BRONCOS TO RESUME
ACTION THIS WEEKEND IN SAN DIEGO: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and
women’s cross country teams will return to action this Saturday, Sept. 18, in
