VOLLEYBALL: BRONCOS WIN
THREE OUT OF FOUR IN ALASKA TOURNEY
2004 Overall Record:
3-1.
BRONCOS GET SEASON
OFF TO SOLID START: Fueled by a pair of dramatic, five-game wins over
tournament host Alaska Fairbanks, Cal Poly Pomona’s
women’s volleyball team won three out of four matches to open the 2004 season.
The Broncos took part in the Midnight Sun Invitational and finished second in
the four-team tourney. Cal Poly Pomona beat Alaska Fairbanks twice and also
posted a win over Western State
(Colo). The Broncos’ only loss was a four-game defeat
to Findlay (Ohio),
which is a returning NCAA Division II playoff team and which received votes in
the AVCA Preseason National Top-25 poll. The Broncos opened their season on
Thursday and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to stun Alaska Fairbanks, 28-30, 27-30,
30-26, 30-26, 15-10. Cal Poly Pomona trailed in the fifth game, 6-4, but used a
6-0 run to take control of the match. The Nanooks
closed to within 12-10, but the Broncos scored the final three points of the
match. Allison Anderson (Jr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) led
the Broncos with 22 kills, while Kellie
Francis (Jr., Chino, Don Lugo
HS) added 20 kills and 17 digs. Breezie Jordan
(Jr., Ventura, Buena
HS) had a strong defensive game with a team-high 18 digs, while Emily Kennedy (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) had 63 assists. Antoinette Kathol (Fr., Sierra Madre, La Salle HS) had five kills
and nine blocks in her Cal Poly Pomona debut, while Elizabeth Defoort
(Jr., Glendora, Citrus College) had nine kills and three blocks. Casey Riedel (So., Saugus,
Saugus HS) had seven kills and Christina Gordon (Jr., Moreno
Valley, Riverside CC) had six
kills. The Broncos then lost their first match of the year when Findlay rallied
for a 25-30, 30-21, 30-26, 30-23 win on Friday night. Francis led the Broncos
with 23 kills and 15 digs, while Defoort added 12
kills and two blocks. Anderson had
nine kills and four blocks. Kathol again had a
team-high in blocks, this time with five. Jordan
led the team again in digs with 18. On Saturday, the Broncos won both their
matches. First, they posted a 30-16, 30-24, 30-16 win over Western
State College. Anderson
led a balanced attack with nine kills, four blocks and 14 digs. Francis had
eight kills, three aces and eight digs, while Gordon added seven kills. Jordan
had a career-high six aces for the Broncos, who had 14 in the match. Jen Bullock (Sr., Anaheim,
Eastern New Mexico) had 23
assists and two aces. The Broncos came back later Saturday to post an important
five-game win over Alaska Fairbanks. Anderson and Francis had 19 kills each to
lead the Broncos. Anderson also led
the team with 16 digs. Defoort had 13 kills and
Gordon recorded 12 kills. Megan Meenan (Sr., Hermosa Beach,
El Camino College) had 14 digs and Kiting
Kolar (Fr., La Canada,
La Canada HS) had 13 digs. Kennedy had 48 assists, while Bullock had 12. The
Broncos dropped the first game and were down, 29-28, in the second game, but a
kill by Anderson knotted things up.
Kills by Anderson and Defoort closed the game out for
the Broncos. The Broncos won game three and, after failing to close out the
match in four games, won the fifth game handily.

BRONCOS
WIN HOME OPENER; FALL IN WASHINGTON: The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team got
its 2004 season off on a winning note with a home win over Bryant University
(Rhode Island), 4-2, last Thursday at Kellogg Field. The win was the first for
the Broncos in a season-opener since 1997. It was quite a debut for Matt Barker (Fr., La
Verne, Bonita HS), who scored two goals, including a
dazzling end-to-end rush that resulted in a score that gave the Broncos a 3-1
edge. His second goal of the game in the 80th minute iced the game
for the Broncos. Andrew Pierce (Jr.,
Oswego, N.Y.,
Oswego HS) opened the scoring for the Broncos just 6:15 into the contest when he scored with an
assist from Robert Cardenas (Sr., Chino Hills, Mt. San
Antonio College). The Broncos extended their 1-0 halftime lead to 2-0 just five
minutes into the second half when Cardenas
knocked in a rebound of a shot by Darren
Ross (Jr., El Camino Real HS) that had bounced off a goalpost. After Bryant
scored two minutes later to make it 2-1, Barker gave the Broncos some breathing
room. Barker, beginning on the Broncos’ half of the field, began dribbling upfield. He was being kicked and pushed all the way up the
field, but maintained possession and, finally, after faking out the Bryant
goalie, knocked a shot into the net to give Cal Poly Pomona a 3-1 advantage.
Bryant scored nine minutes later to cut the lead to 3-2, but Barker scored his
second goal of the game when he headed in a cross from Pierce to put the game
out of reach. Goals were not as plentiful on Saturday when the Broncos dropped
a 3-1 decision at Western Washington. Peter Hazdovac
(Fr., San Pedro, San Pedro HS) got the only Bronco goal when he scored just
five seconds before halftime with an assist from Ben Van der Fluit
(Fr., Calabasas, Calabasas HS). That tied the score at 1-1, but the Vikings
scored a pair of second-half goals to get the win. Tim Sisk (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar
HS) made three saves for the Broncos, who owned a slim 10-9 edge in shots.
BRONCOS TO COMPLETE THREE-GAME WASHINGTON
SWING: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team will play a pair of games this
week in Washington to conclude
its three-game road trip. The Broncos will be at Seattle Pacific today (Monday,
Aug. 30) and then face Seattle University
on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The Broncos’ next home game is next Friday, Sept. 10,
against Concordia University.
WOMEN'S
SOCCER: BRONCOS LOSE PAIR OF ONE-GOAL DECISIONS
2004
Overall Record: 0-2.
BRONCOS
GET OFF TO BUMPY START WITH TWO HEARTBREAKERS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s
soccer team suffered a pair of tough one-goal losses to open the 2004 season.
The Broncos were unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead in their home opener last
Thursday and lost to Bryant University
(Rhode Island), 3-2, in overtime
at Kellogg Field. The Broncos had the better scoring opportunities and owned a
17-9 edge in shots. Cal Poly Pomona took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Kimberly Stillman
(Fr., Arcadia, Arcadia HS) just
seven minutes into the game. Stillman converted on a
corner kick from Chelsea Hipley (Jr., Sacramento,
Woodcreek HS). The Broncos
made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half when Jamie Black (Jr., Torrance,
West HS) scored with an assist from Kristi Ibello
(So., Santa Rosa, Ursuline HS). Bryant, though, got the game-tying goal in
the 76th minute on a breakaway and then scored less than four
minutes into overtime to get the win. The Broncos played a much sounder
defensive game at Western Washington on Saturday, but
still came up short in a 1-0 decision. The only goal of the game was an own goal., which was scored when a Western Washington
cross inadvertently went off the heel of a Bronco defender and into the net.
The Broncos held an 11-10 edge in shots and had a couple golden scoring
opportunities in the first half. A header by Lisa Araujo
(Sr., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) went just wide before halftime and a free kick by Sara Flowers (Fr., Santee, Santana HS)
hit the crossbar and bounced away. Tia Rudolph (Sr.,
Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS)
got the rebound, but her shot was saved by the Western Washington
goalie. Vanessa Richardson (Jr., Upland,
Upland HS) made four saves for the Broncos.
BRONCOS TO COMPLETE TRIP IN SEATTLE:
Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team will conclude its two-game swing through Washington
with a match today (Monday, Aug. 30) at Seattle Pacific. The Broncos have
another road game, this one against Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 7, before
their next home game on Friday, Sept. 10.
