BASEBALL: BRONCOS WIN
TWO OF THREE NON-CONFERENCE GAMES
2005 Record:
19-13. 2005 CCAA Record: 15-7
BRONCOS WIN GAMES
AGAINST AZUSA PACIFIC AND CONCORDIA: Cal Poly
Pomona’s baseball team won two of three non-conference games last week against
NAIA opponents Azusa Pacific and Concordia. The Broncos lead the California
Collegiate Athletic Association South Division with a 15-7 conference mark. Cal
Poly Pomona opened the week with a thrilling 8-7 win over Azusa Pacific on
Tuesday. The Broncos trailed, 7-4, entering the ninth inning, but scored four
times to get the victory. The final two runs scored on an infield hit with the
bases loaded by Marc Evans (So.,
Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS). With Matt Lopez (Sr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS) running from second
base and Caleb Allen (So., Poway,
Poway HS) running from first base, Evans hit a chopper up the middle. By the
time the shortstop was able to glove it, Allen was on second base. When the
throw went to first base, Lopez kept running around third base and scored the
winning run easily. Greg Denning
(Sr., Atasacadero, Cuesta College)
had three hits and scored twice for the Broncos, while Evan Barnhart (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) had a pair of hits and
scored twice. Bryan Jackson (Jr., Placentia,
Orange Coast
College) blanked the Cougars on two
hits over the final two innings to pick up the win for Cal Poly Pomona. Russell Smith (Sr., Brawley, Brawley HS) went 6 1/3 strong innings for the Broncos,
allowing only three runs over the first six innings. Jake Mendrin (Jr., La Habra Heights, Cal
State Fullerton) had a two-run triple, Andy
Gonzales (Sr., Whittier, California HS) had a run-scoring single and
Denning walked with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to set the stage for
the Broncos’ game-winning rally in the ninth. Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk to
force in one run and Allen singled in another before Evans’ hit won the game.
Cal Poly Pomona then attempted to pull the same trick on Wednesday at
Concordia, but fell short in an 8-7 loss. The Broncos scored five times in the
ninth inning, but were unable to pull out the victory. Anthony Esquer (Jr., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) had two hits and drove in three runs,
while Matt Stevens (Sr., Riverside,
Rubidoux HS) and Jarrod
Allen (Sr., Poway, San
Diego Mesa College)
had three hits each and scored twice. The Broncos had 14 hits in the game. Stephen Payte
(Jr., Lancaster, Lancaster HS) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless
innings, Justin Carty
(Jr., Upland, Montclair HS) pitched
two scoreless innings and Matt Lusk
(Jr., Bakersfield, Bakersfield JC)
worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning
for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona, though, was hurt by five errors that led to
seven unearned runs. The Broncos bounced back on Friday and beat Concordia,
8-4, at Scolinos Field. The Broncos scored four times
in the first inning and had a 14-hit attack. Luis Carreras (Jr., San Dimas,
Walnut HS) hurled two hitless innings and struck out two to pick up the
victory. Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta
Loma, Etiwanda HS) allowed five hits and two runs in
three innings for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona rallied from an early 2-0
deficit with its four-run first inning. Lopez, Stevens and Mendrin
singled to start the game and get the Broncos on the board. Denning followed
with a two-run double to give the Broncos a 3-2 edge. Esquer
had the big hit of the game, a booming three-run home run in the seventh inning
that gave the Broncos an 8-3 lead. John
Cross (Jr., La Palma, Long Beach CC) blanked the Eagles over the final two innings
to complete the win for the Broncos.
CROSS NAMED CCAA
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s John
Cross (Jr., La Palma, Long Beach CC) was named the Wilson California Collegiate
Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 21-28.
Cross went 2-0 with a 0.69 earned run average to lead the Broncos to two of
their three conference victories that week. He fired a one-hit, seven-inning
shutout over UC San Diego on March 21 and followed that up by allowing one run
and four hits over six innings in a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills
on March 26. For the week, Cross went a total of 13 innings in two starts and
allowed only one run on five hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
