MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS LOSE A HEARTBREAKER AT ELITE EIGHT

2004-05 Record: 24-7. 2004-05 CCAA Record: 16-4 (T1)

2004-05 West Region Champs

BRONCOS UNABLE TO HOLD LATE LEAD IN QUARTERFINALS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team, the 2004-05 NCAA Division II West Region champs, dropped a heartbreaking 58-56 decision to Tarleton State (TX) Wednesday at the Elite Eight in Grand Forks, N.D. The Broncos held a 54-45 lead with 4:23 to go, but were outscored, 13-2, down the stretch. The winning basket was scored with 3.2 seconds remaining and the Broncos were unable to get off a final shot. Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had a team-high 12 points for the Broncos, while David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had 11 points, two rebounds and three assists. Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) had nine points and four rebounds, while Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) had six points and five assists and Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) had six points, two rebounds and two steals. The Broncos were outrebounded, 35-22, and Tartleton State shot 58 percent in the second half to rally for the win. A 3-pointer by Boyd just before the buzzer gave the Broncos a 26-20 halftime lead and two free throws by Sybesma gave the Broncos their biggest lead of the game, 41-31, with 10:59 to play. Tarleton State sliced the lead to four points, but a pair of free throws by Malone opened the lead back up to nine points, 54-45, before the Roadrunners rallied again. A jumper by Daniels stopped an initial run by Tarleton State and gave Cal Poly Pomona a 56-51 advantage with 2:11 left, but the Broncos were blanked the rest of the way and the Roadrunners scored the final seven points of the game.

BRONCOS EARN SEVERAL POSTSEASON HONORS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team was well-represented on NCAA Division II All-Region and All-America teams announced last week. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS), the program’s all-time leading scorer, became only the fifth player in the program’s history to earn All-America honors when he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ All-America team. A total of 16 players from across the country were named to the exclusive team. Bonds is the first Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball player since Terry Ross in 1991 to earn All-America honors. Bonds and David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) were both named to the NABC All-Region first team, marking the first time in the program’s history that two Broncos were named to the first team. Bonds also earned first-team all-region honors on the Daktronics squads voted upon by sports information directors, while Sybesma earned second-team honors. The Broncos, who won their second NCAA Division II West Region championship in the past three years, also picked up top California Collegiate Athletic Association accolades as well. Sybesma was named the CCAA Player of the Year, becoming the first Bronco since Ross in 1991 to earn that honor, while Greg Kamansky was named the CCAA Coach of the Year. Bonds joined Sybesma on the All-CCAA first team, while Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) earned second-team honors.

BRONCOS CONTINUE TO HOLD CCAA SOUTH DIVISION LEAD: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team split a doubleheader last Monday against UC San Diego and then won two of three games at Cal State Dominguez Hills in a busy week of California Collegiate Athletic Association action. The Broncos got two strong starting pitching performances from John Cross (Jr., La Palma, Long Beach CC) to highlight the week. Cross tossed a seven-inning one hitter for the Broncos on Monday to lead Cal Poly Pomona to a 7-0 victory and a split of a doubleheader. Cross walked only one and struck out four and faced the minimum 21 batters through the seven innings. Cal Poly Pomona turned two doubleplays behind him. Matt Lopez (Sr., Lancaster,. Mendrin and Greg Denning (Sr., Atascadero, Cuesta College) had three hits each. The Broncos then went to Carson for a three-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros used a three-run rally in the ninth inning to win the opener, 5-3. Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) pitched eight strong innings and carried a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning. The Toros tied the game on a one-out single and the next batter hit a game-winning two-run home run. Matt Stevens (Sr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) had given the Broncos a 3-2 lead with a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning. Denning and Esquer drove in the Broncos’ other runs. Cal Poly Pomona then swept a doubleheader on Saturday, 2-1 and 10-8. Cross turned in his second pitching gem of the week, allowing only four hits and one run in six-plus innings of work. John Lee (So., San Dimas, Damien HS) hurled 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief and Matt Lusk (Jr., Bakersfield, Bakersfield JC) struck out the only batter he faced with two runners on to end the game for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Lopez and then made it 2-0 in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Andy Gonzales (Sr., Whittier, California HS). Cal Poly Pomona then used a six-run rally in the sixth inning to pull out a 10-8 win in the nightcap. Kyle Todd (Fr., Anaheim, Magnolia HS) allowed only three hits and one run over the final 2 2/3 innings to get the win. Kevin Falls (So., Chino Hills, Damien HS) drove in four runs in the game, while Stevens and Mendrin drove in two runs each. The Broncos trailed, 7-4, entering the sixth. Chris Janowicz (Jr., Arroyo Grande, Oregon State) got the rally started with a one-out solo home run. Stevens singled in a run to make it 7-6 and Mendrin’s RBI single tied the game at 7-7. Stevens then was credited with a steal of home after a double-steal with Mendrin to give the Broncos the lead. Falls followed with a two-run double to give the Broncos a 10-7 edge.
