BRONCOS AVENGE EARLY
LOSS TO SONOMA STATE: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s
basketball team took over sole possession of second place in the California
Collegiate Athletic Association thanks to a pair of impressive road victories
last weekend. The Broncos have won 13 of their last 15 games and are alone in
second place, one game back of defending champion Cal State San Bernardino. The
Broncos started the weekend with a 78-66 victory over San
Francisco State on
Friday. The Broncos shot 72.7 percent in the first half and 65.9 percent for
the game and rolled to the win. Jeff
Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) led the way with 23 points, four assists
and three blocks. He made nine of his 11 field-goal attempts. David Sybesma
(Sr., Corona, Corona
Centennial HS) had 20 points and four assists and made seven of his nine
field-goal tries. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg
HS) had 11 points and six rebounds, while Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 10 points and three
rebounds. Dion Cook (So., Canoga
Park, Chaminade HS) led the team with seven rebounds. The
Broncos surrendered the first five points of the game, but battled back quickly
and took the lead for good on a free throw by Sybesma
that made it 21-20 midway through the first half. The Broncos led by as many as
eight points in the first half before settling for a 38-31 halftime edge. The
Broncos led by as many as 14 points in the second half and never by less than
six points. Cal Poly Pomona had a 30-22 rebounding edge and also knocked down
17 of 20 free-throw tries. The Broncos then turned in one of their best
defensive efforts of the season and beat Sonoma State, 66-45. The Broncos held
the Seawolves to just 18 second-half points and
avenged an early-season loss to Sonoma
State in Kellogg Gym. The 45 points
are a season low for a Cal Poly Pomona opponent. Bonds led five Broncos in
double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds. Malone II and Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) scored 12 points each, while Cook and Sybesma had 11 points each. The Broncos shot 47.9 percent
for the game and hit a sizzling 60 percent of their field-goal attempts in the
second half. Sonoma State
shot just 28.6 percent for the game and just 19.4 percent in the second half.
The Broncos trailed early, 13-8, but held the Seawolves
to just 14 points over the final 15 minutes of the first half to take a 32-27
halftime lead. Cal Poly Pomona took a double-digit lead for the first time on
Malone’s 3-pointer that gave the Broncos a 45-35 edge. The Broncos then built
leads as large as 22 points and had a double-digit margin the rest of the way.
BRONCOS SLIP TO
SEVENTH IN REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team slipped
from sixth to seventh in the latest NCAA Division II West Region poll following
the Broncos’ upset loss to Cal State
Monterey Bay
on Jan. 29. Hawaii-Hilo is ranked first, with Seattle Pacific, Western
Washington, Cal State San
Bernardino, Alaska Fairbanks, Cal State Bakersfield,
Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State,
BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade rounding out the Top Ten. The
Broncos will move up in the next rankings that will be released on Wednesday
following the wins last week over San Francisco
State and Sonoma
State.
BRONCOS WANT TO
“BRING BACK THE PACK!”: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s basketball
programs are hoping to “Bring Back The Pack” for a key California Collegiate
Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State Bakersfield this Friday,
Feb. 11. The response was so great from Bronco fans for Pack the Gym Night
against Cal State San Bernardino on Jan. 21 that everyone is invited back for
more exciting basketball action as the Broncos battle for first place in both
the men’s and women’s division. A free tailgate party will once again be held
for all Cal Poly Pomona students, staff and faculty beginning at 4:30 p.m. There will be free pizza, a live
disc jockey and drinks. There will also be free giveaways during the games and
live performances by the Cal Poly Pomona cheer squad and the Bronco Pep Band
and also special dance performances during the halftimes. There will also be
free face-painting by Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes and the games will be
aired on Adelphia cable channel 10 as well as campus
channel 33. It’s also Greek Night, so wear your letters! The Broncos will play
their next four games in Kellogg Gym. After Friday, the Broncos will host Cal
State L.A. on Saturday, Chico State
on Friday, Feb. 18 and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Feb. 19.

BRONCOS COLLECT TWO
MORE IMPORTANT ROAD WINS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team remained
in a three-way tie for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic
Association after picking up a pair of road wins last week. The Broncos have
won seven straight games for the second time this season. Cal Poly Pomona
opened the weekend with an 82-60 victory over San
Francisco State on
Friday. The Broncos trailed, 35-31, at halftime but then outscored the Gators,
51-25, in the second half. Candice Allen
(Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona)
led the Broncos with a game-high 39 points and eight rebounds to lead the
Broncos. Ashley Moody (Fr., Carson,
King Drew HS) added a season-high 11 points, while Lauren Stayton (Jr., Inglewood, Fresno State) had eight points and
six rebounds. Back-to-back layups by Allen tied the
game at 35-35 and a tip-in by Allen moments later gave the Broncos the lead for
good at 41-39. Cal Poly Pomona broke the game open with a 23-8 run over a
seven-minute stretch that extended a 47-44 lead to a 70-52 advantage with 5:43 to play. San
Francisco State
had a 40-37 edge in rebounding, but the Broncos forced 31 turnovers and
committed only 13. Cal Poly Pomona then fought off Sonoma State, 72-69,
Saturday night in Seawolf Gym. Allen once again led
the Broncos with 35 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Natasha Reed (Fr., San Francisco, Deer Valley HS) had eight points
and a season-high 13 rebounds, while Brandi
Fletcher (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) had eight points, five rebounds
and five steals. The Broncos shot just 36.6 percent for the game and misfired
on 18 of their 22 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Cal Poly Pomona led by
as many as nine points in the first half and had a 40-37 halftime edge. Sonoma
State grabbed the lead in the
second half and held a 62-59 advantage with 8:27
to go. The Broncos took the lead for good on an Allen jumper that broke a 66-66
tie with 4:18 remaining. Sonoma
State trailed by just one point, 70-69, but the Broncos forced a turnover with
11 seconds to go. Unique Anderson (Fr.,
Lake Elsinore, Temescal
Canyon HS) hit two free throws with four seconds left to ice the game.
BRONCOS RETURN HOME
FOR NEXT FOUR CONFERNCE GAMES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team,
ranked 19th in the NCAA Division II, will play its next four games
in Kellogg Gym, beginning with a big contest Friday night on “Bring Back The Pack Night” against Cal State Bakersfield. After the
huge success of Pack the Gym Night, the Broncos are inviting all their fans
back for another big evening of CCAA action. A free tailgate party will once
again be held for all Cal Poly Pomona students, staff and faculty beginning at 4:30 p.m. There will be free pizza, a live
disc jockey and drinks. There will also be free giveaways during the games and
live performances by the Cal Poly Pomona cheer squad and the Bronco Pep Band

BRONCOS WIN NIGHTCAP
OF A WELL-PLAYED DOUBLEHEADER: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team got its 2005
season underway last week with four games against top competition. The Broncos opened
the 2005 season with a 1-0 loss to NAIA heavyweight Biola University
Tuesday afternoon at Scolinos Field. Cal Poly Pomona
got two shutout innings from Taylor
Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS), Luis Carreras (Jr., San
Dimas, Walnut HS), John Cross (Jr., La
Palma, Long Beach CC) and John Lee (So., San Dimas,
Damien HS). Lee then gave up a tough-luck double to open the ninth inning and Biola eventually pushed across a run to win the game. The
Broncos then lost to Azusa Pacific, 6-2, on Wednesday in Azusa.
The Broncos scored both of their runs in the fifth inning. Jarrod Allen (Sr., Poway, San Diego Mesa
College) walked and Marc Evans (So., Alta Loma, Etiwanda
HS) was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After Evan Barnhart (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda
HS) popped out, Anthony Esquer (Jr., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) was
hit by a pitch to load the bases. Greg
Denning (Sr., Atascadero, Cuesta College)
singled in Allen for the Broncos’ first run and Evans scored on a fielder’s
choice groundout off the bat of Matt
Stevens (Sr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS). The Broncos then split a non-conference doubleheader
on Saturday at Scolinos Field against California
Collegiate Athletic Association favorite Chico
State. The Broncos dropped the
opener, 7-0, but came back to take the nightcap, 5-3. In the first game, the
Broncos were limited to just two hits by a pair of Chico
State pitchers. A double by Denning
in the sixth inning and a ninth-inning single by Stevens were the only hits for
the Broncos. Wilding allowed nine hits and five runs in 6 2/3 innings of work,
while Mike Quintal (Jr., Santa
Clara, San Jose CC) allowed
only one hit over 1 2/3 innings for the Broncos. In the nightcap, Carreras
limited the Wildcats to two runs and five hits in six-plus innings. After Chico
State sliced a 5-1 Cal Poly Pomona lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Lusk (Jr., Bakersfield,
Bakersfield JC) got the final out on a fly out to left with the bases loaded to
end the game. Stevens had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the
Broncos, while Evans added a solo home run. Denning had a run-scoring double
and Andy Gonzales (Sr., Whittier, California HS) stole home as part of an attempted double
steal in the sixth inning.
