BRONCOS ROLL PAST GATORS, SEAWOLVES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team rebounded nicely from a midweek loss to conference-leading Cal State, San Bernardino and recorded victories at San Francisco State and Sonoma State over the weekend. The Broncos have already won 18 games this season, marking the third time in four years they have won 18 matches. A 19th win this weekend would be the most for the Broncos since they went 24-8 in 1997. Cal Poly Pomona opened the week with a four-game loss to Cal State, San Bernardino. The Broncos rallied impressively in the third game after dropping the first two frames, but the Coyotes still posted a 30-21, 30-16, 25-30, 30-21 victory in Darlene May Gym. Lindsay Fischer (Jr., Alta Loma, Alta Loma HS) had a strong match for the Broncos, recording 15 kills and 12 digs. Kimberly Bullock (Sr., Hesperia, Victor Valley JC) had 10 kills, while Carina Nusinov (Sr., Agoura Hills, Moorpark College) had 10 kills and 14 digs. Emily Kennedy (Fr., Upland, Upland HS) had 38 assists. Cal Poly Pomona then went up to San Francisco State and defeated the Gators on Friday, 26-30, 30-25, 30-18, 30-25. The Broncos rallied from a 14-2 deficit in Game 4 to close out the match. Fischer had 18 kills, 11 digs and five blocks to lead the way, while Nusinov contributed 17 kills and 10 digs and Allison Anderson (Fr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had 12 kills and six blocks. Anne Stinchfield (Fr., San Diego, Mt. Carmel HS) led the team with five service aces. Bullock had a team-leading eight blocks for the Broncos, who had a 14-2 edge in total team blocks. Kennedy had 45 assists. The Broncos then finished off the road portion of their 2002 schedule with a 30-23, 30-21, 30-22 win over Sonoma State. Nusinov had a team-high 14 kills to go along with 11 digs, Fischer had 12 kills, 13 digs and four blocks and Bullock had 12 kills and three blocks. Anderson had eight kills and four blocks, Breezie Jordan (Fr., Ventura, Buena HS) had a team-high three service aces and Kennedy had 42 assists.
BRONCOS READY FOR FINAL HOME MATCHES: The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team will conclude its 2002 regular season this weekend with matches Friday night against Cal State L.A. and Saturday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Darlene May Gym. The Broncos will honor seniors Kimberly Bullock (MB, Hesperia, Victor Valley JC), Shannon Keller (L, Westlake Village, Moorpark College) and Carina Nusinov (OH, Agoura Hills, Moorpark College) before Saturday’s game. Cal Poly Pomona still holds slim regional playoff hopes. The Broncos were ranked 10th in the Pacific Region heading into last week’s contests. The Broncos are currently tied for fifth in the CCAA with Cal State Bakersfield, one game behind fourth-place Chico State.

BRONCOS LEFT OUT OF 24-TEAM PLAYOFF FIELD: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team, after a disappointing 2-1 loss to UC Davis in an opening-round match on Thursday at the CCAA Championship Tournament, got even worse news later in the week. When the 24-team NCAA Division II playoff field was announced, the Broncos were not in it. Cal Poly Pomona entered the CCAA Tournament ranked second in the Far West Region, yet were not one of three teams selected by the NCAA on Sunday. UC San Diego is the No. 1 seed from the region, UC Davis is No. 2 and San Francisco State, which did not qualify for the CCAA Tournament, is the No. 3 seed.
BRONCOS FALL IN TORRENTIAL RAINSTORM: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to UC Davis on Thursday in a semifinal match at the CCAA Championship Tournament. The game was played in a torrential downpour at Sonoma State, which had its power knocked out by a lightening strike during the second half. The contest was stopped for about 35 minutes in the second half because of heavy rain and lightening. Cal Poly Pomona had the first golden scoring opportunity, but a shot by Tia Rudolph (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) that had eluded the UC Davis goalkeeper, hit a mud puddle and stopped right in front of the goal. The UC Davis goalkeeper then had time to recover and jump on the ball to prevent a goal. The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, but Cal Poly Pomona evened the score at 1-1 in the first minute of the second half. Erica Rodriguez (Fr., San Diego, Bonita Vista HS) took in a pass from Jamie Black (Fr., Torrance, West HS), cut up the middle of the field and drilled a shot into the goal. It was Rodriguez’ fifth goal of the season. Any momentum the Broncos might have gained, though, was quickly stopped. With 33:53 remaining in regulation, the teams were sent off the field because of the weather conditions. After a 35-minute delay, the game resumed, but, without power, the Sonoma State scoreboard was not operating. The teams battled through the remainder of regulation and then, just two minutes into overtime, UC Davis got the game-winning goal. A direct kick from 35 yards out skipped and skidded on the sloppy field and found its way into the net, just inside the post. UC Davis had a slight edge in shots, 9-8. Vanessa Richardson (Fr., Upland, Upland HS) had one save for the Broncos.
AKMAN-ZOLLINGER GETS ACADEMIC RECOGNITION: Kim Akman-Zollinger (Sr., Claremont, Claremont HS) was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII second team on Friday. Akman-Zollinger was one of six members from the California Collegiate Athletic Association to be honored. Two teams of 11 players were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Akman-Zollinger, who is an urban regional planning major at Cal Poly Pomona, carries a 3.43 grade point average and has made the Dean’s List for four quarters. She was also an Academic All-Star for one year. She started all 19 games for the Broncos this season and helped Cal Poly Pomona to an 11-6-2 record. In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and be either a starter or important reserve. District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
MCCONNELL, ARAUJO NAMED TO ALL-CCAA FIRST TEAM: Michelle McConnell (Jr., Alta Loma, Alta Loma HS) and Lisa Araujo (So., Rialto, Eisenhower HS) were both named to the All-CCAA first team last week in voting done by the conference coaches. McConnell, who also earned first-team honors last season, led the Broncos in scoring with eight goals and 23 points. Araujo, who was the CCAA Freshman of the Year last season, had eight goals and 21 points. Cal Poly Pomona also placed five student-athletes on the second team. Goalkeeper Katie Kreps (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) was honored by the conference for the fourth straight season. She earned honorable mention as a freshman and then earned first-team honors the past two seasons. She compiled an 8-5-1 record with a 1.02 goals against average this season. Twin sisters Kim Akman-Zollinger (Sr., Claremont, Claremont HS) and Kira Akman (Sr., Claremont, Claremont HS) both made the second team as well. This is the first honor for Kira Akman and the third for Akman-Zollinger, who was honorable mention the past two seasons. In addition, midfielder Chelsea Hipley (Fr., Sacramento, Woodcreek HS) and forward Tia Rudolph (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Alta Loma HS) were named to the second team. Hipley, one of the top freshmen in the conference, was third on the team in scoring with four goals and eight assists, while Rudolph, who earned conference honorable mention last year, had two goals and two assists.
BRONCO FRESHMAN FINISHES THIRD IN WEST REGIONAL: Cal Poly Pomona’s Mark Batres (Fr., Rowland Heights, Bosco Tech HS) finished third in the NCAA Division II West Regional on Saturday at Fresno’s Woodward Park and became the first cross country runner since 1997 to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships. The national championships will be held on Nov. 23 in Ashland, Ohio. Batres covered the 10K course at Woodward Park in 32:26. Batres, who won the CCAA Championship two weeks ago, will be heading to nationals alone, though, because the Cal Poly Pomona men finished eighth. The top three teams – Chico State, UC Davis and Alaska Anchorage -- advanced. Following Batres for the Broncos were James Tawney (Fr., Barstow, Barstow HS), who took 30th in 34:22; Matt Rainwater (Sr., Brea, Brea-Olinda HS), who was 44th in 34:53; Shaun Fitzgerald (Fr., Downey, Calvary Chapel HS), who was 55th in 35:12; Tom Hummel (Fr., Nevada City, Nevada Union HS), who was 62nd in 35:38; James DeBruhl (Jr., Chino, Chino HS), who was 73rd in 36:12 and Humberto Arredondo (Fr., Azusa, Azusa HS), who was 83rd in 37:17. The Cal Poly Pomona women finished 14th in the regional. Shawna Winfrey (So., Santee, West Hills HS) had the top individual performance, taking 63rd in 24:15 over the 6K course. Jamie Ray (So., Barstow, Barstow HS) was 67th in 24:31; Natalie Miano (Fr., La Puente, Nogales HS) was 81st in 25:09; Monica Valdez (So., Lake Elsinore, Temescal Canyon HS) was 84th in 25:15; Katie Price (Jr., Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande HS) was 89th in 25:28 and Julie Johnson (Fr., San Juan Capistrano, Dana Hills HS) was 94th in 25:51.
2002 Regional Ranking: 9 (10-28-02)
BRONCO DEFENDER MAKES VERIZON ALL-DISTRICT TEAM: Randall Quick (Sr., Mira Loma, Notre Dame HS) was selected to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII College Division team on Thursday. Quick was part of an 11-player squad selected by the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA). Quick was one of five players from the California Collegiate Athletic Association named to the team. Two players each from UC San Diego and UC Davis were also selected. Quick, a computer information systems major, carries a 3.76 grade point average at Cal Poly Pomona. He was the Broncos’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both his sophomore and junior years. He is a four-year member of the men’s soccer program.
BORNSTEIN NAMED CCAA’S TOP FRESHMAN: Forward Jonathan Bornstein (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) earned first-team All-CCAA honors in voting done by the conference coaches and was also honored as the conference’s Freshman of the Year. Bornstein led the Broncos in scoring with 10 goals and 27 assists and was a main reason why the Broncos went from 3-15-1 in 2001 to 8-9-1 in 2002. Bornstein was the lone first-team selection for the Broncos, but two more players earned second-team recognition. Defender Randall Quick (Sr., Mira Loma, Notre Dame HS) and midfielder Robert Cardenas (So., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) were named to the second squad.
