BRONCOS BEAT COYOTES IN FRONT OF A RECORD HOME CROWD: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team picked up two important California Collegiate Athletic Association victories last weekend, including a thrilling win over rival Cal State San Bernardino in front of a huge crowd at Pack the Gym Night. A new Kellogg Gym record crowd of 1,672 saw the Broncos come up big down the stretch in a 70-67 win Friday over the Coyotes. The win knocked the Coyotes out of a share of first place and into a second-place tie with the Broncos and Sonoma State. David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS), who hit the memorable game-tying shot at the buzzer against Cal State San Bernardino in the 2003 NCAA Division II West Regional championship game, was at it again Friday against the Coyotes. Sybesma had a game-high 20 points, six rebounds and four assists and hit the biggest shot of the game in the final minute of play. With the game tied at 54-54, Sybesma knocked down a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to give the Broncos the lead for good, 57-54. Sybesma made a free throw with 19.6 seconds left to keep the lead at 58-55 and two free throws by Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) with 11.6 seconds left iced the victory for the Broncos. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 12 points, including a key steal and driving layup that tied the score at 54-54. Bonds also had six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) and Boyd had seven points each, while Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) had six points. Cal Poly Pomona was on the short end of a 36-30 rebounding count, but made only eight turnovers in the game and also converted 15-of-21 free-throw attempts. The Broncos then completed the weekend sweep with a 71-55 victory over UC San Diego on Saturday night. Sybesma capped his tremendous weekend with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Cook added a career-high 16 points. Bonds had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. The Broncos put the game away early, jumping out to leads of 14-2, 23-8 and 30-11 before UC San Diego closed the first half with an 8-0 run that made it 30-19 at halftime. Cal Poly Pomona quickly opened up a 15-point lead in the second half and built leads as large as 19. UC San Diego never got closer than 12 points after that. Kaelen Daniels (Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) and Kevin Neveu (Fr., San Leandro, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS) had six points each for the Broncos.

BRONCOS GO BACK ON THE ROAD FOR NEXT FOUR GAMES: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team will face two key California Collegiate Athletic Association contests on the road this week, beginning with a Wednesday game against Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. The Broncos will also play on the road next week against San Francisco State and Sonoma State before returning home for a key showdown with CCAA leader Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Feb. 11.
