MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS WIN TWO OF THREE IN BUSY WEEK

2004-05 Record: 7-4. 2004-05 CCAA Record: 2-2

BRONCOS BEAT BYU-HAWAII, CAL STATE L.A., THEN LOSE HEARTBREAKER: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team picked up two big victories last week and came painfully close to sweeping all three contests. Cal Poly Pomona opened the week with an 84-70 victory over then-No. 9 BYU-Hawaii last Monday in Kellogg Gym. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg HS) poured in a career-high 22 points and knocked down four big 3-pointers to lead the Broncos. David Sybesma (Sr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had a big game as well, scoring 21 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) had 15 points, while Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 12 points and five rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona held a 46-40 halftime lead thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Malone in the final minute of the first half. The Broncos led the rest of the way and opened up a 13-point edge, 58-45, after a 3-pointer by Sybesma with 15:05 to go. BYU-Hawaii sliced the lead down to seven points, 60-53, with 12:06 to go, but the Broncos went on a 6-1 run capped by a three-point play by Kevin Neveu (Fr., San Leandro, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS) after he rebounded a missed free throw, got fouled and made the shot. Cal Poly Pomona held a 37-24 rebounding edge and also forced 15 turnovers. The Broncos then resumed California Collegiate Athletic Association action with a 76-51 victory over Cal State L.A. Friday night in Los Angeles. Cal Poly Pomona held a 40-28 halftime edge and led by double-digit margins for the entire second half. The Broncos also held a 36-22 rebounding edge. Bonds led the Broncos with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Sybesma added 16 points and eight rebounds. Malone and Neveu had nine points each, while Cook had eight points and five rebounds.  The Broncos then had a furious second-half rally come up just short in Bakersfield on Saturday and lost to Cal State Bakersfield, 73-71, in Centennial Garden. The Broncos trailed by 11 points, 70-59, with 2:47 to go, but got as close as one point late in the game and had two possessions that could have either sent the game into overtime or even won the game. Sybesma started the late rally, hitting a long 3-pointer and then converting a three-point play to make it 70-65 with 1:35 left. After a Roadrunner turnover, Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) hit a 3-pointer to make it 70-68 with 1:06 remaining. After a Cal State Bakersfield basket, Sybesma scored again to make it 72-70. The Broncos then forced a quick turnover with five seconds left and Bonds made one of two free throws to make it 72-71. Cal State Bakersfield turned the ball over yet again and the Broncos had one last chance with four seconds to play. An inbounds pass, though, bounced off a Bronco player in a crowd and the Roadrunners escaped with the win. Sybesma tied a career-high with 27 points and also had seven points and three assists. Bonds had 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Cook had nine points and four assists.

2004-05 National Ranking: 18

BRONCOS BEAT GOLDEN EAGLES, BUT LOSE TO ROADRUNNERS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team, which is ranked 18th in the nation in the latest Division II WBCA/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, split a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association contests last week. The Broncos opened the week with an 86-61 victory over Cal State L.A. on Friday in Los Angeles. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona) recorded her first double-double of the season to lead the way. Allen had 38 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and six steals. Shanika Perkins (Jr., Oakland, Oakland HS) had 14 points, four rebounds and one assists, while Shryah Thomas (Sr., Inglewood, San Francisco State) had eight points, four rebounds and two assists. The Broncos led by only six, 39-33, at halftime, but outscored the Golden Eagles, 47-28, in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona trailed by as many as five points midway through the first half, 17-12, but a jumper by Ge’Yanni Polk (So., San Leandro, San Lorenzo HS) tied the game at 19-19 and the Broncos then took the lead for good on a jumper by Thomas. A jumper by Allen gave the Broncos an 11-point lead, 57-46, with 14:12 left and Cal Poly Pomona led by double digits the rest of the way. The Broncos then dropped their first conference game of the season, 86-74, Saturday night in Centennial Garden. Cal Poly Pomona led early, 19-14, but Cal State Bakersfield closed the first half with a 28-7 run and took a 42-26 halftime lead. The Broncos sliced the deficit to eight points, 58-50, after a free throw by Brandi Fletcher (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) with 10:47 to go, but the Roadrunners went on a 17-4 run to open up a 75-54 advantage. Cal Poly Pomona committed 24 turnovers and shot just 39 percent for the game. The Broncos did own a 45-39 rebounding edge. Fletcher had a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos, while Perkins had a season-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Allen and Natasha Reed (Fr., San Francisco, Deer Valley HS) had 11 points each for the Broncos. Reed recorded her first double-double of the season, also grabbing a season-high 11 rebounds.
