MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS RECORD WIN OVER DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY
2004-05 Record: 5-3.
2004-05 CCAA Record: 1-1
BRONCOS USE ANOTHER
BIG SECOND HALF TO POST VICTORY: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team
stretched its winning streak to four games after beating NAIA program Dominican
University, 75-61, last Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos overcame a
slow start and outscored the Penguins, 48-30, in the second half. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists
to lead the Broncos, while David Sybesma (Sr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) had 10 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Hervey Malone II (Jr., Pittsburg,
Pittsburg HS) and Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park,
Chaminade HS) had 10 points each for Cal Poly Pomona.
The Broncos shot just 30 percent in the first half, but came alive in the
second half and hit 58 percent of its shots. The shooting woes in the first 20
minutes extended to the free-throw line, where the Broncos were only seven of
14. Dominican got a quick jump on the Broncos and scored the first seven points
of the game. Cal Poly Pomona responded with a 12-0 run behind a 3-pointer and
three-point play by Bonds and back-to-back 3-pointers by Billy Hofman (So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS). Dominican came back with a big run of its own
and opened up a 24-16 lead, but the Broncos carved the deficit to 31-27 by
halftime. Dominican led by as many as six points in the second half, the final
time at 35-29. Cal Poly Pomona took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Malone,
44-43, with 10:46 to go. Malone’s
basket started a game-breaking 17-5 run over a five-minute span that gave the
Broncos a 60-49 edge. Jonathan Boyd
(Jr., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had
nine points for the Broncos, while Kevin
Nevue (Fr., San Leandro, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS)
had seven points and three rebounds. The Broncos owned a 40-29 advantage on the
boards.
BONDS NAMED CCAA
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s Jeff
Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS) was named the
Wilson California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of
the Week for the week of Dec. 13-19. Bonds led the Broncos to a pair of
important NCAA Division II West Region victories that week. First, he scored 22
points and grabbed nine rebounds in Cal Poly Pomona’s 72-53 victory over Seattle
University and he added 15 points
and five rebounds in the Broncos’ 59-46 win at Grand Canyon.
For the week, Bonds averaged 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. The award
was Bonds’ second of the season and the third of his Cal Poly Pomona career. Bonds, Cal Poly Pomona’s all-time leading scorer, has 1,404
points.

BRONCOS LOSE TWICE IN
CCAA/GNAC CLASSIC IN SEATTLE: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team,
which is ranked 12th in the nation in the Division II WBCA/ESPN
Coaches’ Poll, suffered its first two losses of the season last week in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association/Great Northwest Athletic Conference
Classic, hosted by Seattle Pacific. The Broncos had a nightmarish trip to Seattle
and were forced to fly to Portland
and bus to Seattle late Wednesday
night. The 1 p.m. tip-off on Thursday
certainly didn’t help matters and the Broncos lost their first game of the
season, 78-64, to Western Washington. Cal Poly Pomona
shot just 32 percent for the game and made just 22 percent of its shots in the
first half. The Broncos had a 15-game regular-season winning streak snapped by
the Vikings. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario,
University
of Arizona) led the Broncos with 23
points, although she was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game and
played only 28 minutes before fouling out. Brandi
Fletcher (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) added 10 points and four rebounds. The
Broncos trailed at halftime, 36-28, and were down by 10 points early in the
second half. Cal Poly Pomona rallied and took a 57-56 lead after a four-point
play by Allen with 8:36 to go. The
Broncos led one more time, 59-58, after a put-back by Porsche’ Kirksey (Fr., Gardena, Junipero Serra HS) with 8:05
left, but Western Washington went on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to
take control of the game. A pair of free throws by Lauren Stayton (Jr., Inglewood,
Fresno State)
cut the deficit to 70-64 with 3:52
left, but the Vikings closed out the game by scoring the final eight points. Western
Washington owned a hefty 59-35 advantage in rebounds. Cal Poly
Pomona then lost to No. 4 Seattle Pacific in a battle of national powers. The
Broncos trailed by just seven at halftime, 44-37, but were outscored, 46-28, in
the second 20 minutes. Allen had 30 points and six rebounds to lead the
Broncos, while Stayton had 12 points and eight rebounds. Fletcher added eight
points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Broncos were on the short end of a
46-41 rebounding count and shot just 32 percent for the game. Cal Poly Pomona
shot just 27 percent in the second half.
